G50 and G55 Manual Transmissions: Description

The new Toyota Hilux has adopted the G50 and G55 manual transmissions. The G50 transmission is used with the 2KD-FTV 2WD engine, while the G55 transmission is used with the 1TR-FE 2WD engine. Both transmissions feature a reverse synchromesh mechanism to enhance ease of operation when shifting into reverse. This mechanism uses two shifting keys that push on the synchronizer ring, applying a brake to the rotation of the counter shaft and preventing gear noise when shifting into reverse.

2. Operation
While shifting into 5th, the 2 shifting keys move in unison with the hub sleeve (F1). With "A" acting as
the fulcrum, the 2 shifting keys move to push the synchronizer ring only for the amount of the lever ratio
(F2). The shift effort can be reduced only for this amount.

While shifting into reverse, with "B" acting as the fulcrum, the 2 shifting keys move to push the
synchronizer ring (F2). As a result, a brake is applied to the rotation of the counter shaft and gear noise is
prevented.
