Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in 1907 in Mexico City. She is best known for her self-portraits which explored her Mexican and indigenous cultural identities. Kahlo suffered from health issues throughout her life, including a bus accident at age 18 that left her in great pain. She began painting while recovering from her injuries and focused on themes of physical and psychological pain in her art. Kahlo painted over 140 works during her career, 55 of which were self-portraits. She died in 1954 at the age of 47 in Mexico City.

Born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico

Died on July 13, 1954 in Coyoacan, Mexico City, Mexico. At the


age of 47.

Mexican painter best known for her self-portraits

Mexican & Amerindian cultures are very important in her work

Her art has been described as:


- surrealist
- naive art
- folk art
- "ribbon around a bomb"

Kahlo had a lot of problems growing up which isolated her from


everyone else which explains why she mostly does self-portraits

EARLY LIFE

Kahlo was the third of four daughters

the Mexican Revolution began when she was only 3 years old

1922 she attended Escuela Nacional Preparatoria

1925 she had an accident causing her to break most of the


bones in her body and put her in a full body cast. Although, she
recovered she suffered excruciating pain every now and then for
the rest of her life. She was never able to have a child even
though she became pregnant 3 times, they all failed.

CAREER

She left the study of medicine to study painting because of her


unability to move around

Because of her miscarriages, her paintings mostly depicted


failure

She painted at least 140 paintings and 55 of them were self


portraits.
