News Release: Riverside Police Announce Results of Final Tobacco Checks

The Riverside Police Department completed their final undercover compliance checks of local gas stations and convenience stores to ensure they were not selling tobacco products to minors. During the checks on May 28th, officers visited 7-11, Marathon and Amstar gas stations with an assisting minor, and found that none of the retailers sold tobacco to the minor, maintaining 100% compliance with tobacco laws. The police department credited the compliance to an educational grant program that trains retailers on tobacco purchasing laws and conducts surprise checks.

Riverside Police Announce Results of Final Tobacco Checks

Riverside Police Department completed their final compliance checks at local retailers to
ensure compliance with State laws and local ordinances regarding the sale of tobacco
products to minors.
The 7-11, Marathon and Amstar gas stations were visited by Officer Brian Greenenwald
and an assisting minor on May 28. RPD is pleased to report that none of the retailers sold
tobacco products to minors.
This grant-funded program is in place to make sure that our retailers continue to do the
right thing to prevent underage tobacco purchases. Im happy to report that our officers
completed the grant for 2014-2015 and retailers were in 100% compliance once again,
said Officer Brian Greenenwald.
This program begins with education with retailers being provided training materials and
store signage regarding tobacco purchasing laws. Following that education, three surprise
compliance checks are performed to ensure retailers are following the applicable
ordinances and laws.
