Science Report 2

This document outlines the steps of an experiment to test how the amount of air blown into a balloon rocket affects how it works. It describes the materials needed, including a balloon, straw, pencil, and pin. The method involves attaching the balloon to the bent straw, taping it securely, attaching the pin through the straw to the pencil eraser, and blowing different amounts of air into the balloon. The results showed the rocket did not work well with little air but went fast and turned when a lot of air was blown in. This supports the prediction that more air is needed for the rocket to function properly. Further questions are not outlined.

Step 1: Explain the question or problem to be tested.

Background knowledge/research/
Observations Ive already made about the topic

It uses wind energy, and if you dont do the steps correctly, the rocket wont work. It also uses elastic
energy, because the balloon is stretchy and when you blow the balloon up it holds the air. If you hold
the tip of the balloon so the air stays inside the air has potential energy because the air is still. If you let
the balloon go, it has kinetic energy because the air is moving.

Write a question or describe a problem I want to test with my experiment:

To write a question, use this format: How does ---- affect ---?
To describe a problem, use some version of the word effect or affect
Does the rocket work if you blow a little bit of air into it?

Step 2: Formulate & Explain your Prediction

What I think could happen and why?

If you blow a little bit of air, it doesnt work, but if you blow a lot, it works.

Step 3: Design method (your steps)

Description of what to do

Picture or diagram
(If it is helpful to explain how to do the step)

1.

Put the balloon on the straw, while the bendy part of the
straw is tilted to face you.

2.

Tape the balloon tightly to the straw. Make sure that the
bottom of the balloon is securely taped so no air gets
out.

3.

Get the pin, and push it thorough the middle of the straw
so it goes through both sides.

4.

Attach it to the pencil. (The pin gets attached to the

eraser part at the bottom) make sure there is space
between the straw and the top of the pin, as well as the
pin and the pencil.

5.

Blow into the end of the straw were the balloon isnt
attached to until you think its good enough.

6.

Let the air go out of the balloon but still hold onto the
pencil.

7.

Quickly tap the balloon/straw a bit towards the place you / \

want it to go to.

What warnings, if any, might you need to make in doing this experiment?
Be carful that the balloon hits no one while this is going on.

Step 4: Explain possible changes

To identify your CHANGES:
What changes could be made to give you a clearer picture?
Adding or removing equipment, changing the materials or the environment, etc.
Doing it outside on a sunny day with no wind could work because on a windy day outside, it wouldnt go
because the wind is pushing it one way, not the other.

Step 5: Interpret & Explain Results

Experiment results
Make a list of the results that you noticed/observed or
calculated from the experiment

Conclusions
For each result, write what the results might mean
(You might have to do some scientific research for this step!)

Didnt go so well with little air.

It didnt work because it needs lots of air not just

a bit of air.

With lots of air it went really fast and turned a lot.

Thats because it had lots of air, and since the

straw was bent towards me it would turn, and if it
werent the air wouldnt make the rocket spin.
