Lyndon Green Junior School: Re: E-Safety Assembly

The deputy headteacher held an e-safety assembly for Years 5 and 6 to discuss the importance of strong passwords, safety on social media, and the dangers of the video chat app OoVoo. Parents are advised to watch videos on the school website about these topics and to remove OoVoo from children's devices due to reports of inappropriate content being shared. Parents are asked to continue monitoring their children's online activities and set parental controls, and the school will work with parents and children to provide updates on online safety issues.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Re: E-safety Assembly
This morning Mr. Crees and I held an e-safety assembly with all Year 5 and 6 children. During
this assembly we watched a couple of video clips. One was about the importance of strong
passwords and the second was about safety on social networking sites. Both of these videos
can be found on our school website. http://lgjs.j2bloggy.com/blog/category/safe/
I would advise all parents to have a look in order to support your children make the correct
choices online, to keep safe. The jigsaw video shocked some children as the content
demonstrated potential consequences of choices children make online.
In addition, we advised all the children who have an ooVoo account to remove it from their
devices. OoVoo is a video chat app. It lets you make video calls, voice calls and send texts to
friends and family. You can also start a group video chat with up to 12 people. The default
privacy settings are set to 'public', so you can talk to people you don't know. These settings can
be changed so that you can just talk to your friends, but you need to actively do this when you
sign up. It has been reported that some unsavoury characters have been targeting ooVoo and
posting inappropriate, explicit videos to children. We are aware that this has happened to some
of our children in LGJS.
Please continue to be vigilant with your childrens online activities. Please check out our website
for hints and tips to set parental controls and to start conversations with your children about this
important aspect of life. We will continue to work in partnership with you and your children to
keep you informed of any changes or new apps etc. as we become informed.
Thanks for your continued support and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any
concerns.
Kind Regards,

Judith Pitt
