MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING (MT)

BASIC THEORY
Magnetism
The moving electrons in an atom produce
a magnetic field.

Magnetic Materials
Materials can be classified as Dia, Para or
Ferro, magnetic, based on their reaction
to external magnetic fields.

Diamagnetic Materials

E
E

Slightly repelled by a magnetic field.

Do not retain the magnetic properties
when the external magnetic field is
removed.
Examples:
Copper, Silver, Gold, etc.

Paramagnetic Materials

removed.
Examples:
Magnesium, Molybdennum, Lithium,
Tantalum, etc.

Ferromagnetic Materials

They

propeties even after the
external magnetic field has been

Iron, Cobalt, Nickel and their
Alloys only.
