Math Ipdp Presentation

This document contains a sample performance task from a math department's Common Core unit on geometric constructions. The task involves having students construct equilateral triangles of approximately 4 cm sides without using a ruler. They then combine their triangles into a larger geometric shape. Students are asked to reflect on what they learned about constructing shapes like hexagons inscribed in circles using only a compass and ruler.

Make geometric constructions.

Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of
tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string,
reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric
software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle;
bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing
perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector
of a line segment; and constructing a line parallel to a
given line through a point not on the line.
Construct an equilateral triangle, a square, and a
regular hexagon inscribed in a circle.

Who can draw the best Equilateral Triangle?

Shea (who is conveniently not here) will buy
the winner a cookie

Rules:
1.Sides should be as close to 4 cm as possible.
2.You can not use a ruler for this attempt.
3.You cannot trace, just do it freehand

Brainstorm
How can we find out who won ?
What methods would we use to
judge?

do you want Shea
to buy you?

Once you are

done cut out
your equilateral
triangle.

In groups of six, create a

geometrical shape that is a
composite of all of your
equilateral triangles.

No right or wrong answer,

but did anyone get this?

How can you use what you

have learned so far to
CONSTRUCT a hexagon
inscribed in a circle with just
a compass and a ruler?
