Mid Segments of Triangle

The document defines and provides properties of the mid-segment of a triangle. The mid-segment is the segment that joins the midpoints of two sides of a triangle. It is parallel to the third side and has a length that is half of the third side. Examples are given to demonstrate finding lengths of mid-segments and using mid-segments to find the perimeter of a triangle when only mid-segment lengths are given.

Mid-Segment of a Triangle

Topic Index | Geometry Index | Regents Exam Prep Center

Definition:
The mid-segment of a triangle (also called a midline) is a
segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle.

Properties:
1.

The mid-segment of a triangle joins the midpoints of two sides of a triangle

such that it is parallel to the third side of the triangle.

2.

The mid-segment of a triangle joins the midpoints of two sides of a triangle

such that its length is half the length of the third side of the triangle.

Examples:
1. Given DE is the length of the mid-

Solution:
The mid-segment is half of the third side.

AB = 14.

2. Given DE, DF, and FE are the

Solution:
The mid-segment is half of the third side.
6 is half of 12 so AC = 12
7 is half of 14 so CB = 14
8 is half of 16 so AB = 16
The perimeter of the large triangle ABC is:
12 + 14 + 16 = 42.

Question 6
Given: A(4,4), B(5,9), C(1,3) as the
midpoints of the sides of triangle DEF.
Find the coordinates of the vertices of
triangleDEF.

Solution:
Method 1. Graphing/Linear Eqs .
Mid-segments are parallel to the third side
of their triangles. Determine the slope of
each side of the given triangle and draw
lines through the opposite vertices with the
same slopes (see graph). Find where lines
intersect by using graph paper or by solving
linear equations.
Line through A: slope = 6/4=3/2

Method 2. Sim
Using midpoin

Equation: y - 4 = 3/2 (x - 4)
y = (3/2)x - 2
Line through C: slope = 1/3
Equation: y - 9 = (1/3) (x - 5)
y = (1/3)x + (22/3)
Set equations equal:
(1/3)x + (22/3) = (3/2)x - 2
(7/6)x = (28/3)
x = 8 and then y = 10. And continue with
this method for the other two points.
