Dutch-based AkzoNobel
Management to be
Brought Together in New
AkzoNobel Center in 2015
AkzoNobel intends to concentrate its
Dutch-based management personnel in
a new office building in the Zuidas business district of Amsterdam from the end
of 2015.
The move will bring the majority of corporate and business management and their supporting staff in the
Netherlands together at a single location, promoting cross-company collaboration. Currently, head office and
Dutch-based business unit management
and their supporting staff are spread
across four office locations.
The new building will enable a

cost savings. Following the relocation, the company will no
longer have offices in Amersfoort and
Hoofddorp. The relocation will have no
direct consequences in terms of employment opportunities and employees have
been informed about the plans.
When the companys headquarters
moved from Arnhem to Amsterdam in
2007, AkzoNobel signed a contract to
become the tenant of a new building

Envirolastic 980 PA, an advanced highbuild polyaspartic urethane coating
delivering rapid return to service and
one-coat exterior durability.
According to the company, because
of its high-build properties, Envirolastic
980 PA eliminates the need for the twocoat application over a zinc-rich primer
that has been the industry standard for
decades. Performance requirements can
be achieved without the intermediate
coat. In addition, the product offers
curing even in low or humid temperatures, abrasion and corrosion resistance, and high gloss retention. Up to
9 mils dry film thickness is possible in
just one pass.
The coating dries to touch in 30
minutes and an asset can be returned
to service in two hours when applied
at 77 F (25 C). This compares to the
more typical two coats that require
two eight-hour worker shifts with
significant nonproductive time in between coats, and return to service
times that vary widely with the environment in which it is being applied.
Envirolastic 980 PA is also suitable for
use on sports facilities and other highvisibility structures.

Pearl Finish to its Cashmere
Interior Latex Paint
Sherwin-Williams Cashmere Interior
Latex Paint has introduced a pearl finish
to the line. The Pearl sheen adds a subtle
shimmer to Cashmere paint that is not as
shiny as semi-gloss - it is midway between
flat and egg-shel - for a lustrous finishing
touch. It is especially suitable for higherend residential projects and for customers who may be looking to create more
elaborate spaces, such as formal dining

appreciate how easy the product applies

With the introduction of pearl finish

Currently available are flat enamel, low

Currently approximately nine percent of its expenditure on raw materials in both its coatings and speciality
chemicals sectors is on biobased chemicals. But it wants to considerably increase that figure by taking advantage
of the move from first-generation bio

to the second generation derived mostly
from cellulosic waste.
We plan to take first generation opportunities as a stepping stone but insist
suppliers work towards the second generation, he said.
The company is also conscious that, at
a time of threats of raw materials shortages, renewables can be an alternative
source of supplies.
(The deal with Solvay) leads to
greater collaboration in the supply

we aim to work on biobased solutions
that also address a supply bottleneck in
the chain.
As a result of the agreement, Solvay
is increasing production capacity of
Epicerol in an epichlorohydrin plant
in China after already raising capacity in a plant in Thailand and another
in France.
Our goal is to develop a preference
for Epicerol and thereby contribute to
a more sustainable world, said JeanLuc Preat, head of Solvays Epicerol
business. By developing a biobased
supply route next to the traditional
petrochemical route we are (also)
helping to reinforce the security of
supplies to the industry.
However, Solvay revealed that the
two companies have still to finalize
the procedure for verifying the quantities of Epicerol indirectly purchased by
AkzoNobel. This verification will likely
involve an independent consultant to ensure confidentiality between the various
supply chain partners and compliance
with competition laws.

lobal distributor Univar Inc. is planning to broadly expand its recentlyacquired chemical distribution network

paint and coatings industry. With expectations
of growth rates in excess of the countrys expanding economy, the Redmond, Washingtonbased distributor plans to focus its Brazilian
operation entirely on domestic growth, while
serving the remainder of Latin America from its
Mexico operation.
We serve all main segments of industry
in Brazil, including the automotive, construction and white goods industries, said Marco
Antonio Quirino, who was appointed as the
president of Univar Brazil in early May. Within
the paint and coatings market, we are not yet
selling to the ten biggest international companies that control about 75 percent of the market, but we currently do serve the ten percent
share of the market which is supplied through
distribution, said Quirino, based at company
headquarters in Osasco, Sao Paulo state.
The company provides close to 200 individual products to paint and coatings formulators,
of which approximately 60 percent are specialty chemicals and 40 percent are commodities,
Quirino said. Univar produces polyurethane
manufacturing systems in Osasco, along with
warehousing and laboratory facilities. The
company also has two regional warehouses, in
Recife, Pernambuco state, in the north, and in
Itaja, Santa Catarina state, in the south.
The north is a very important growth area
for us because the regional economic expansion is faster than that of the country overall,
noted Quirino. Over the past decade, government policies oriented at low-cost housing and
poverty eradication have resulted in a growing
consumer class there, he added.
Univar imports most of its products through
the port at Itaja and then trucks the goods to
Osasco or the other warehouse centers, rather
than using the Sao Paulo port of Santos. The

Co-Branding
Co-Branding is defined as the combination of
two brands to create a single, unique product.
The purpose of Co-Branding is to capitalize on
the equity of each brand and enhance the success of the total product. A perfect example of
the successful use of Co-Branding would be a
luxury car . . . Bentley and a fine time piece . . . . .
Breitling. They help each other strengthen their
respective brands while concurrently remaining
distinct from each other. They co-magnify each
others high-end luxury image.

alspars sales for fiscal year 2012 totaled $4.03 bn, a two percent increase from fiscal year 2011. Revenues in the companys Coatings segment increased four percent. This segment
gained new business in every product line, and saw double-digit sales
growth in general industrial and coil product lines. The Coatings segment includes a broad range of decorative and protective coatings for
metal, wood and plastic, primarily for sale to OEM customers. Products within the Coatings segment include primers, topcoats, varnishes,
inks, sprays, stains, fillers and other coatings used by customers in a
wide range of manufacturing industries, including building products,
appliances, furniture, transportations, agricultural and construction
equipment, metal packaging and metal fabrication.
Paint segment revenues were flat for the year, reflecting weakness
in China and Australia and slow economic recovery in the U.S. Despite these challenges, Valspar achieved double-digit volume growth
in China with the successful introduction of a new product line for
the affordable housing market. In Australia, the partnership with Masters, a regional joint venture with Lowes, continues to gain traction.
All Masters stores feature Valspars Wattyl paint as the flagship paint
brand and its 150-store growth plan is on target. The Valspar paint
brands introduction of the Love Your Color Guarantee in the U.S.
and Australia was well-received by consumers and generated positive
paint sales and volumes. Through its Paints segment, Valspar offers a
wide variety of products such as paints, primers, topcoats and aerosol
spray paints sold primarily through retailers and distribution networks.
The company sells branded and other products in the paints segment,
including Valspar, Cabot, Huarun, DeBeer and House of Kolor. This
segment includes architectural and automotive refinish lines.

a double-digit revenue increase reflecting strength in industrial and
packaging product lines and last years acquisition of Isocoat, a Brazilian-based manufacturer of powder coatings. Valspars progress
in China continued with aggressive efforts to expand the Huarun
and Valspar brands and the introduction of new products for the
affordable housing market. The consumer paint business in China
generated mid-single-digit revenue growth and high single-digit volume growth in the second half of the year.
Valspar also initiated a new partnership with B&Q, the largest home improvement retailer in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

One has been reformulated with an advanced stain-blocking formula to help homeowners successfully take on many of their paint
projects around the house.
Behrs flagship line, Behr Premium Plus paint, was also improved in 2012. The new interior paint formula is a self-priming and zero volatile organic compound (VOC) paint that seals
uncoated or previously painted surfaces without the need for a
separate primer, reducing time and labor. Also launched by Behr
in 2012 was a new line of low VOC colorants for use across all
product lines.
Behr also took steps toward international growth in 2012 by
developing a portfolio of products distinctly tailored to the Mexico
market. The company reported that by the end of March 2013,
Behr products will be available in 90 Home Depot stores in Mexico.

ussian Coatings has been gradually increasing its sales volume. In 2012 the growth of sales volume was 9.1 percent.
The production volume amounted to 96 percent in tons due
to the sales decrease of decorative-building materials based on organic solvents. Considerable growth of water material sales volume
allowed this business to keep the volume of realization at the level of
last year. BRITE Hausweiss products (made with Teflon technology)
and PREMIA products (antimicrobic paint with ions of silver) saw
growth. Automobile OEM business also increased its sales volume
by 16 percent. The process of localization of OEM materials for the
Dupont Russian Coatings JV is one of the strategic goals of the further development of this business. The share of localized products
in the volume of automotive paints in 2012 constituted 84 percent.
