Change Over Valve For Testing Device

The change-over valve allows testing of steam turbine safety devices by shutting off trip oil flow and allowing control oil to enter the trip oil circuit. During normal operation, control oil keeps the valve in the upper position connecting trip oil to the trip oil circuit. When safety devices are tested, control oil enters the top of the valve moving it down and connecting control oil to the trip circuit to prevent emergency stop valves from closing during testing. The valve position is monitored by two limit switches.

Steam Turbine

Description
Function
The function of the change-over valve is to shut off
the flow of trip oil into the trip oil circuit while the
protective devices are being tested for proper
operation by means of the automatic turbine tester
(ATT) and to allow control oil a to flow into trip oil
circuit so that the emergency stop valves do not
close when the safety devices respond during ATT.
Mode of Operation
During normal operation, the control oil a1 in the
space under the lower piston (8) of the changeover valve keeps the valve in the upper end
position as shown here. In this way, connection x
is connected with connection x1' and trip oil can
flow into the trip oil circuit. The space above the
upper piston (6) (connection

a) remains depressurized during normal operation.

When safety /protection devices are checked for
proper operation, the space under the lower piston
(8) is depressurized by means of a solenoid valve
and control oil a enters the space above the upper
piston, which moves the valve into the downward
position and cut of trip oil supply from connection x.
Due to movement of valve downward, the
connection now made between connections a and
x1and control oil a can flow freely into the trip fluid
circuit, which keeps the emergency stop & HP
control valves open for the duration of the test. Two
limit switches (1) transmit signal of position the
change over valve to the control room.
