PROCEDURE
Assessment
1. Assess clients risk for, or extent of, infection
2. Inspect integrity of your hands and nails
3. Keep natural nails less than inch long
4. Consider the type of nursing activity being
performed
5. Inspect hands for visible soiling
Procedure
1. Remove wristwatch and rings
2. Keep hands and uniform away from sink
surfaces
3. Turn on water
4. Avoid splashing
5. Regulate flow and water temperature
6. Wet hands, keeping hands lower than elbows
7. Apply 2-5 ml soap and lather thoroughly
8. Interlace fingers and rub palms and back of
hands with a circular motion at least five times
each, keeping fingers pointing down
9. Clean under fingers
10.Rinse thoroughly keeping hands lower than
elbows
11.Repeat steps 1-9 if hands are heavily soiled
12.Dry hands thoroughly from fingers to wrist to
forearms
13.Discard paper towel, if used
14.Turn off water, using dry paper towel or foot or
knee pedals
15.Use individual-use container of lotion or barrier
cream if hands are dry or chapped

2. Inspect for dermatitis or cracking
