Lab Report: Franklin's Bell

This lab report describes an experiment to recreate Franklin's Bell, a device invented by Benjamin Franklin that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy through electromagnetic induction. The experiment uses two Coke cans connected by wires to a high voltage source like an electric fly swatter. When powered, the electric current causes one can to attract or repel the other, making the chopstick attached to them move repeatedly. The background provides details on how Franklin's original device worked by transferring electrons between two metal surfaces using an electric field.

Lab Report: Franklins Bell

Objective:
To understand how the device converted electrical energy to mechanical energy,
when the device has been used in form of repeating mechanical motion. Also to understand
the movement, the attraction, how electrons, protons, and neutrons, transfered and what
effects caused by the device in form of repearing mechanical motion.[3] After understanding,
we can adapt the information we have learned to our daily life.
Materials:
-2 Coke can
-Chocstick
-2 wires
-String
-top lid
-Sticky tape
-Wilmhurst Machine or electric fly swatter

Diagram:

Procedure:
1. Empty and clean both coke cans
2. Cut a string out (make it a little shorter than the size of the can)
3. Tie it to a top lid
4. Tie the other end to a chopstick
5. Put 2 coke can near each other, leave some space and put a chopstick that
you tie the top lid to on top of the 2 coke cans.
6. Connect a wire on each side of both coke cans and connect the other end to
wilmhurst machine or electric fly swatter
7. Turn on the wilmhurst machine or electric fly swatter
8. Observe the result and take notes.

Background:
Franklins bell was first created in 1840 by Benjamin Franklin. It is the process of
electric substance trasnferring an electric charge to each others via an electric intermediary.
The bell could receive and transfer an electron between 2 metal substances. Specifically,
when an electricity or electron runs through electric wire, the metal which is connected to the
wire are given a negative charge, the bell would be attract to a negative charge an is given a
negative charge from an electronic substance. Altogether, the bell would repel a negative
charged substance and becoming inductive to another substance which equally contain both
negative and positive charge, an electron would be carried and transfered through the bell to
another conductive substance and then repeatedly work on transferring.[1] [2]
Equation relavant to the experiemental prototype
F = qe or F = qvB

F=qE, E is a vector of an electric field when it react with force q where q is a force.
When q is positive, force will go with the same direction as electric field. When q is negative,
force will go opposite with electric field.[4]
