Week 2: In-Class Assessment On Teamwork (Group Work, Individual Assessment)
Week 2: In-Class Assessment On Teamwork (Group Work, Individual Assessment)
Assessment value: 5%
Due to the complex and multi-disciplinary nature of engineering projects, professional engineers
will, over the course of their careers, perform most of their work in teams. The ability to work
effectively in a team is an essential skill for engineers. Teams are formed and managed in order to
achieve objectives by harnessing the diverse and complementary skills of the individuals within the
team. With the common goal in mind, it is important for the individuals within the team to know the
strengths and weaknesses of their colleagues in order to allocate tasks and nominate roles
appropriately.
Activities
During the Week 2 tutorial, you will participate in group activities and form into a team of
minimum five for the duration of this semester. You will undertake the EWB Challenge as a
team. Your tutor will outline the fundamentals of an effective team and introduce you to
Belbins team role summary descriptions.
Within your newly formed team, you will share and discuss your individual strengths,
weaknesses and interests, and discuss what roles would best suit each team member. This
information should then be used to allocate appropriate roles and tasks for yourself and
each of your teammates.
Finally, you will discuss your expectations of one another and make suggestions for your
team charter (i.e., workload allocation, deadlines, quality, meeting schedule, communication
mediums and protocols, conflict management, etc.). During this activity, you will need to
ensure that you record notes of these discussions.
During the course of the tutorial, your tutor will observe your participation in the team formation
exercise, and query each group.
Scope of exercise
Based on your understanding of teamwork fundamentals and the qualities you bring as an individual
to your team, you will:
participate in, and make notes of the team discussion regarding:
o the strengths, weaknesses and interests of yourself and each of your teammates;
o appropriate roles and task allocations for yourself and your teammates; and
o elements of your team charter.
respond to queries from your tutor.
