You Use If You Don't Have To Calculate The Period of Time, Because You Have It in The Sentence

The document discusses the proper uses of the words "for" and "since" when indicating periods of time. It states that "for" should be used if the specific period is provided, like "for two months," because the period does not need to be calculated. "Since" should be used if only the starting point is provided, like "since 1975," because the period must be calculated by finding the difference between the starting point and current year. It then provides examples of sentences with blanks to be filled in with either "for" or "since," and explains the rules for determining which preposition to use.

For and Since

- You use FOR if you don't have to calculate the period of

time, because you have it in the sentence :
I have lived here FOR two months ( you don't have to
calculate, you know the period is "two months" )
- You use SINCE if you have to calculate the period of time,
because you only have the starting point
:
I have lived here SINCE 1975 ( you have to calculate now:
if you came in 1975 - the starting point - and now it is 2009,
then 2009-1975 = 24 years
