Rate Equations, External Quantum Efficiencies, Resonant Frequencies.
UNIT-VI
Power launching and Coupling - Source to Fiber Power Launching, Lensing schemes for Coupling
Improvement, fiber-to-fiber Joints, LED coupling tot single mode fibers, Fiber Splicing, Optical fiber
connectors. Photo Detectors Physical principles of photo diodes, photo detector noise, detector
response time, avalanche multiplication noise, structures for InGaAs APDs, temperature effect on
avalanche gain, comparisons of photo detectors.
UNIT-VII
Digital Links: Point to point links, power penalties, error control. Analog links: Over-view of analog
links, carrier to noise ratio, multichannel transmission techniques, RF over fiber, radio over fiber
links.
UNIT-VIII
WDM Concepts and components: Over-view, Passive optical couplers, Isolators & circulators, Fiber
grating filters, dielectric thin film filters, Phased array based devices, Diffraction gratings, Active optical
components, tunable light sources.
