This reflective self-assessment discusses the author's experience observing and teaching lessons during a teaching practicum. The author found the observation period to be very challenging, as they had to actively participate in lessons rather than just observe. MDD 6: Reflective Self-assessment

To begin with, I would like to highlight the high expectations I got before I started
this experience. It was an outstanding experience since last teaching experience was
not carried out at schools, but at University. The environment is completely different
and it is more realistic and there is no room for mistakes or not to take it seriously.
I would like to express that the observation period was one the most challenging
periods so far. I thought I was not going to participate much and just observe.
However, I had to plan activities, to interact with the students, help them and be part
of the class. I did not think that would happen as some comments I heard from other
students. Yet, I am glad everything happened as it did. I consider I learnt a lot of
classroom management and how to approach my students; and especially, what not to
do.
When I had the opportunity to plan my lesson, I have to say that it was hard to
think what I should do. I had to think of my students level of English and what
activities would be communicative as well as fun to do. Besides, I had to consider my
students interests and how I should approach them and to guarantee meaningful
learning. When planning the lesson, I had some problems stating the goal and how I
would make sure my goal is fulfilled by the end of the class. However, I think my class
went quite well, my students participated and produce language which was my main
objective personally. Nonetheless, I think I should have spoken more in English as I did.
I did not because my students were not used to it, so I had to follow my guide
teachers way to do it. Provided that I used more English, I do not believe my students
would participated as they did, nor have learnt and understand a thing.
I still consider I have much to improve, but I feel comfortable with my
performance and the results of it. I would have loved to stay longer at school.
