To add or subtract fractions, if the fractions have the same denominator, simply add or subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator. If the fractions have different denominators, rename the fractions to have a common denominator which is the least common multiple of the original denominators, then add or subtract the numerators and write the result with this common denominator.

Important things to remember

To Add or Subtract Fraction

With the same denominator,
If a, b and c denote integers, and b
0, then
a/b + c/b = a+c/b
and
a/b c/b = a-c/b

With different
denominators, a/b and c/d ,
where b 0 and d 0

If the fractions to be added

or subtracted are dissimilar
Rename the fractions to
make them similar whose
denominator is the least
common multiple of b and d.

Add or subtract the

numerators of the resulting
fractions.
Write the result as a
fraction whose numerator is
the sum or difference of the

numerators and whose

denominator is the least
common multiple of b and d.
