Introduction This textbook has been prepared for students who had masterec hiregana ard katakana to learn and enjoy the process of learning kanji, the third group of characters ir Japanese. By using “Kanji Master Series,” students will learn 2,136 characters listed in the “Revised Joyo (Daily-use) Kanji List" released on November 30, 2010, or 2,150 characters including additional 14 characters that are considered to have high-frequency cf use but not listed in the Revised Joyo (Daily-use) Kanji List, upon completion of N5-N1 series. This series is stuctured so that students can learn rich vocabulary and idioms as well as kanji. Sample words and sentences given in the textbook are selected from daily and familiar scenes. Students can acquire words and expressions commonly used in daily life as they learn kanji characters themselves. For those who are from non-kanji regions, all the kanji in the textbook have ruby for easy learning. We believe that students can grow their ability in kanji without feeling overwhelmed. 2. Organization of Textbook The textbook covers 118 characters that form a foundation for kanji learning. Characters are listed according to their origins in ascending order of difficulty, from ones that provide a base for kanji writing to ones that consist of radicals for other characters. -Pictographs originated from pictures (e.g. Chapters 2 and 3) -Logograms made from symbols (e.g. Chapter 5) -Compound ideographs consisted of parts representing certain meanings (e.g. Chapter 11) Phonetic-ideographs that include cronunciation as a part of a letter (e.g. %, #%, 5¢, etc.) Each chapter is categorized. In addition, the making of kanji is included at the end of the textbooks as Note, We have put many illustrations for students, w1o ave studyng for their first time, to enjoy treir studies. 3. Method of Learning In principle, each chapter contains seven to eight characters, with two characters per page. It is recommended tc make an efficient study plan, such as one to two pages a day or ‘one chapter a day. The appropriate Kun/ On-yomi for NS Level is selected from the Revised Joyo (Daily-use) Kanji List. Please make sure to practice those sentences. On and Kun-yomi Kanji have On and Kun-yomi (Japanese and Chinese readings). -Kun-yomi represents meanings in Japanese; written in hiragana. -On-yoni is pronounced based on Chinese; written in katakana. 2. Declensional Kana Endings When describing Japanese with letters and characters, words such as “ 8%" and“ #fLv." ate written using kanji and hiragana. The part that forms the base of a word is called a “root” and written with kanji. The part conjugated is called ¢ “declensional kana ending’ and written with hiragana.
