This document provides instructions for a problem solving exercise involving a mechanical system with a collar C that slides on rod DE and is connected to bar AB. Students are asked to (a) write equations relating the velocity and acceleration of C to A, (b) substitute known values to find the velocity and acceleration of C, (c) write an equation for the velocity of C with respect to a frame attached to DE, (d) find the angular velocity of DE, and (e) write an equation for the acceleration of C with respect to the rotating frame of DE. Part (f) asks to find the acceleration of C given the angular acceleration of DE.

MMAN2300 2014 Problem Solving Exercise #2

The collar at pin C is connected to AB and slides freely over rod DE.
(a) Write vector equations relating the velocity and acceleration of C to the velocity and
acceleration of A.
(b) Substitute known values for AB and AB and rC/A to the equations from (a) and solve for vc
and ac as vectors.
(c) Write a vector equation for the velocity of C with respect to a rotating frame that is
attached to bar DE.
(d) Find the angular velocity of DE and express it as a vector.
(e) Write a vector equation for the acceleration of C with respect to a rotating frame that is
attached to bar DE.
(f) If the angular acceleration of DE is 5.0 rad/s2 k, find the acceleration of slider C with respect
to the rotating bar DE.
