Breaux Timeline

The document outlines a teacher's action research project timeline to study the effects of gamification on student motivation in learning a foreign language. From August to December, the teacher will observe classes, collect baseline student motivation data through surveys, and research gamification strategies. In January and February, the teacher will continue reviewing literature, gather student feedback, and plan to implement three gamified lessons per semester to test for effects on quizzes and tests. From March to May, the teacher will analyze the collected qualitative and quantitative data, compare results to classes without gamification, and draw conclusions about the impact of gamification on student foreign language learning and motivation.

My Action Research Project Timeline

August-October
Observe and take notes in a journal about motivation for learning another language. Create
a Pre-survey and ask the students to complete it online. Read the literature review about
Gamification. Start to collect data using quizzes, tests, and other assessments online like
the gradebook: ASPEN system. Observe other teachers classes.

November December
Have the literature review. Read tons of sources, talk to others who teach using gamification
to find out the best games online to use in the Foreign Language classroom. Present a
workshop about Free tools online to discuss and discuss with other professionals about the
best strategies to teach a Foreign Language Class. Decide where my efforts can best be
applied to my community of practice. Make a final decision by the end of December.
Obtain permission from the school administration to conduct the research.

January
Continue with literature review. Write a journal about ideas and developments in my class.
Create a post survey before second semester to decide on three out of best applications,
strategies that worked in the past to implement this semester, games they practice in other
classes they can practice in the World Language, find out what they didnt like from the past
semester.

February

Send Letters to parents and students outlining my research and goals for the project. Set
dates for three times this semester I am planning to collect tests/quizzes results and
analyze them. Continue with the notes on the journal comparing the activities done in a
class with gamification and one class without gamification.

Collect various types of qualitative data: Interview other teachers and observe the class and
record the number of specific student and teacher activities. Write in the journal
observations about the students motivation. Student activities will include good questions,
attentive poses, active engagement in the lesson, self-directed learning, disruptive behavior,
off task comments, and inattention to the activity. Teacher activities that will be monitored
will be positive feedback, asking engaging questions, valuing student questions and other
activities to be determined later. I might need assistance at this point.

March
Compare the 2 surveys create a system to measure their responses and analyze the data
collected in the journals.
Compare the results of the first test of last semester with the first test of the second
semester. Analyze the results, take an action and observe again. Taking notes in the journal.
I might need assistance at this point in order to complete and compare results. The
triangulation process might be difficult for me.

April
Compare the Unit 2 test with the Unit 1 test of the second semester after having
implemented the action and then reflect. Revise the strategy implemented, revise the
original plan and make adjustment to my classroom activities and philosophy.

Check students project based their speaking or free response test. Give a different version
of the "End of Course" Test and compare the achievement from the final exam of last
semester.

May
Compare results, summarize, draw conclusions about my work. Final results compared to
last year's students and correlation of achievement on the series of practices tests as
compared to achievement on Exit Exam.

The following graphic will represent the research process.
