Chap11 Perimeter

The document defines perimeter as the total length of boundaries enclosing a region. It provides an example of calculating the perimeter of a shaded region as 42 cm. It defines area as the total number of squares covered by a region. It describes estimating area by counting complete squares covered on a grid. The document then lists formulas for calculating the areas of various shapes, including rectangles, squares, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. It expresses area of a rectangle as length x breadth, area of a square as length x breadth, area of a triangle as 1/2 x base x height, area of a parallelogram as base x height, and area of a trapezoid as 1/2 x

CHAPTER 11

PERIMETER AND AREA

11.1. Perimeter of a region

1.

The perimeter of a region: A total length of the

boundaries that completely enclose the region.
Example:

5 cm
3 cm

12 cm
m
c
13

3 cm

15 cm

The perimeter of the shaded region is

3 + 8 + 15 + 3 + 13 = 42 cm.

8 cm

2.

3.

The area of a region: The total number of

squares completely covered by the region.
The area of a shape can be estimated by
the following method:
a. Trace the shape on a piece of grid paper.
b. Count and tick () the number of
complete squares covered by the shape
c. An incomplete square is not counted if
less than half of the square is covered.

The estimated area of the shaded region is

5 cm.

Area of rectangle
length
breadth

The area of a rectangle = length breadth

Area of square

breadth

The area of a square = length breadth

Area of triangle

base

base

The area of a triangle = base height

Area of parallelogram

base

The area of a parallelogram = base height

Area of trapezium

b

The area of a trapezium = ( a + b) height
