7.8 Inverse Functions and Relations

The document discusses inverse relations and functions. It provides examples of finding the inverse of a relation by reversing the ordered pairs, and finding the inverse of functions by reversing the inputs and outputs. It also gives examples of verifying that two functions are inverse functions of each other by showing that their composition results in the identity function.

Section 7.8: Inverse Functions and Relations

Inverse Relation: The set of ordered pairs obtained by reversing the x and y of the original ordered pairs.
The domain of the relation becomes the range of its inverse.
The range of the relation becomes the domain of its inverse.

To check whether two functions are inverses, evaluate:

(fg)(x) =

(gf)(x) =

If both (fg)(x) and (gf)(x) equal x, then they are inverses.
