Anglo

Anglo-Egyptian Sudan was a condominium of the United Kingdom and Kingdom of Egypt from 1899 to 1956. It was established after the British defeated the Mahdist forces in Sudan and took control of the country. While nominally under joint UK-Egyptian rule, in practice the British had full control over Sudan. Sudan gained self-rule in 1952 and independence from the condominium in 1956. Anglo-Egyptian Sudan encompassed a large area of northern Africa until portions were later ceded to Libya and South Sudan and Sudan gained independence.

Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (Arabic: as-Sdn al-Inglz al-Mar)

referred to the manner by which Sudan was administered between 1899 and 1956, when
it was a condominium of the United Kingdom and Egypt, but in practice the structure of
the Condominium ensured full British control over the Sudan. However, between 1899
and 1922 Egypt was part of the British Empire.
