EPE 1.3 - POWER ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF DC DRIVES
Model Question Paper
Time: 3Hours
Answer any FIVE of the following questions

Max. Marks: 100

1. a. What are power modulators? Explain various configurations of power modulators used for
electrical motor drives.
b. Describe the fundamental torque equations of motor load system.
2. a. Explain the speed torque characteristics of single phase fully controlled drive during motoring
and braking operations.
b. Explain the four quadrant operation of motor driving a load.
b. A 220V, 1500 rpm, 50A separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 is fed
from a three-phase fully controlled rectifier with an ac source voltage of 440V, 50 Hz. A star delta
connected transformer is used to feed the armature so that motor terminal voltage equals rated
voltage when converter firing angle is zero. Calculate transformer turns ratio, the value of firing
angle when motor is running at 1200 rpm and rated torque assuming continuous conduction.
3. a. Explain the operation of PWM current controller of a chopper fed dc drive.
b. Discus the speed controlled systems for DC drives.
4. a. Describe the modeling and design of current controllers for chopper fed dc motor drives.
b. Explain the working of hysteresis current controller.
5. a. Explain the working of three phase fully controlled dc motor drive system.
b. The speed of a 20-hp, 300V, 1800 rpm separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three
phase full converter drive. The field current is also controlled by a three phase full converter and
is set to the maximum possible value. The ac input is a three-phase why-connected 208V, 50Hz
supply. The armature resistance Ra =0.25, field resistance is R f =0.25 and the motor voltage
constant Kv=1.2V/A-rad/s. the armature and field currents can be continuous and ripple free. The
viscous friction is negligible. Determine the delay angle of armature converter, a, if the motor
supplies the rated power at rated speed and the speed regulation.
6. a. Describe the operation of speed controlled drive system.
b. Discuss the converter selection and characteristics for a drive system
7. a. Explain the phase locked loop control of dc motor drives.
b. Obtain the transfer function of DC motor with Proportional controller.
8. a. Obtain the block diagram representation of closed loop control of separately excited dc motor.
b. Explain the operation of chopper for inversion.
