Class Procedures
Class Procedures
Ms. Vibbert
A. Note from the Instructor
As an instructor, I pride myself on an efficient and smooth running classroom. To
achieve this I have established a few simple procedures. As a student, it is your
responsibility to learn and perform these procedures. Through these procedures, I
promise to you a more organized and effective learning experience.
B. Most Common Procedures
Entering the Classroom
You are to enter the classroom without screaming, running or otherwise causing a
ruckus. Students who do not do this will be asked to leave the room and reenter as
expected. It is expected that as soon as you enter you first go to the center table and
pickup any handouts or hand in homework in the appropriate tray. You should then
get anything you need around the room (grade check, pencil sharpening, tissue, etc.).
Once seated, check the front screen for the day's bell work. You should also check the
side chalkboard for the day's assignment (write it down so you don't forget). You can
also use this time to briefly speak with me or make an appointment to make-up a test
or get extra help.
Bell Work
Every day will begin with bell work. You will find the bell work on the front screen.
Bell work should be started before the bell rings. Most bell work will involve
questions from the work that was done the day before. Bell work is required and will
be collected every Friday. I highly recommend studying bell work when quiz time
comes around.
Picking up Materials for Day
For the first few weeks any handouts that you will need on a given day will be found
in the tray, on the middle table marked "Please Take One". If the tray or sign isn't
there, you don't need to pick up anything, just begin the day's bell work. If you arrive
late and picking up the handouts will cause a distraction, sign-in, go to your seat, and
raise your hand when it is appropriate to do so. Due to a paper shortage, as I learn
your names and any schedule changes take effect, I will then write your names on the
majority of your papers and hand them to you as you come in. This will be the only
copy that I will provide you of that hand out.
Textbooks
Textbooks are very expensive and should be treated respectfully. If we do use a
textbook, make sure to not mark in it, always handle with care, and replace under your
desk at the end of the period. The textbooks are assigned to the desks so keep books at
the desk you got them from.
You Forgot a Pencil?
Ask Ms. Vibbert and I will provide you with a writing utensil if I have extras. I dont
always have extras as the year goes on and failure to return borrowed pencil to me
will result in the failure of Ms. V to lend you another one.
Handing In Homework
If there is an assignment that you need to hand in, place it in the black tray, at the end
of the black table, marked "Please Deposit Homework Here". If the tray or sign isn't
there, keep the assignment and begin the day's bell work. If you arrive late and
handing in the homework will cause a distraction, sign-in, go to your seat, and raise
your hand when it is appropriate to do so.
Handing In Classwork
Any assignments that are to be turned in during a class period will be turned in at the
END of the period. There will be a tray to turn things in as you exit the room. Please
remain seated until that time.
Coming to Attention
When I need to quiet the class, I will raise my hand. When you see this you are
expected to stop your conversation, look at me, and raise your hand. This is only
complete when all hands are up and the class is quiet.
Arriving Late
When you enter the room late (with or without a pass) you need not disturb the class.
Simply sign your name and the appropriate information on the clipboard by the door.
Print clearly and sign only your name. Signing a name other that your own will result
in immediate referral to the dean's office. If you have a pass, pin it to the wall above
the clipboard. If you must speak with me, sign-in, go to your seat, and raise your hand
when it is appropriate to do so.
Leaving the Classroom
The bell does not dismiss you, Ms. Vibbert does. Ms. Vibbert will notify you when
the bell is about to ring. Once the bell does ring, wait until she says Goodbye to exit
your seat. You are to keep working up until that point. If you have a pass or
extenuating circumstances that require you to leave the classroom to take care of
school business elsewhere BEFORE the bell rings, show me the pass before class
starts and then make sure you sign out by the door at the time you need to leave. No
need to ask me again at that time, just go.
before you get to class. This does not provide a reason for being tardy. Anyone tardy
for any reason is tardy. The bathroom is not to be used the first 15 minutes of class
and the last 15 minutes of class per Kathleens bathroom policy. Plan accordingly.
Sharpening Your Pencil
If you need to sharpen your pencil, there are 3 handheld sharpeners located in a baggie
next to the chalkboard. I do not have a wall sharpener, do not ask. You are to carefully
remove one of the sharpeners from the Ziploc bag and sharpen your pencil while
standing inside the box on the floor. DO NOT TAKE THE SHARPENER BACK TO
YOUR SEAT. Empty the sharpener into the Ziploc bag labeled Waste when you are
finished. Then place the sharpener back into the top Ziploc bag. Return to your seat.
Only one student may be sharpening at a time. Sharpening your pencil is to be done at
the beginning of class during bellwork, or during independent working time. DO NOT
get up to sharpen your pencil while Ms. Vibbert is talking. Wait until an appropriate
time.
Asking Questions
If you require assistance and need to ask a question, please raise your hand and Ms.
Vibbert will get to you in the order in which hands were raised. If I am talking and
you have a question, you may raise your hand, and if I am at a point where I can
pause, then I will call on you for your question. DO NOT HOLLAR OR YELL across
the room at Ms. Vibbert or anyone else.
Cell Phone Usage
Cell phones may be used at times when Ms. Vibbert specifies. We will be
incorporating technology as much as possible and if you have a device you would like
to use during those times, you are more than welcome to use it. However, when Ms.
Vibbert is talking is NOT one of those times.
The Kathleen High School device policy states:
Unauthorized use of phones/devices will NOT be tolerated in the classroom. If
after warning a student about unauthorized phone/device use, they continue to use
them, do not be confrontational buzz for Administration.
What does that mean? You will get one warning from Ms. Vibbert. It will be a clear
warning and you will know what comes next. If you decide you want to keep using
your device, then the office will be buzzed and the phone will be confiscated. Ms.
Vibbert will not take your device, administration will do it.
**Procedures may be changed or added by the instructor. All procedures will
be thoroughly rehearsed as a class.
