Make The Right Call Lab Directions Procedure

The document provides instructions for three genetics labs that simulate inheritance of alleles for bead color (pink vs. purple) from parent to offspring. For each lab, beads representing the parental alleles are placed in cups and randomly selected to determine the offspring's alleles, which are recorded. Lab 1 uses only dominant pink parental alleles, Lab 2 uses one dominant and one recessive parental allele, and Lab 3 uses one of each parental allele.

Make the Right Call Lab Directions

Procedure for Lab #1:

1. Place two pink beads in Cup 1. This pair of beads represents the female parent’s
alleles. Use the letter P to represent the dominant allele for pink color.
2. Place two purple beads in Cup 2. This pair of beads represents the male parent’s
alleles. Use the letter p to represent the recessive allele for purple color.
3. For Trial 1, remove one bead from Cup 1 without looking in the cup. Record the result
in your data table. Return the bead to the cup. Again, without looking in the cup,
remove one bead from Cup 2. Record the result in your data table. Return the bead to
the cup.
4. In the column labeled Offspring’s Alleles, write PP if your removed two pink beads,
pp if you removed two purple beads, or Pp if you removed one pink bead and one
purple bead.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 four more times.

Procedure for Lab #2:

1. Place two pink beads in Cup 1. This pair of beads represents the female parent’s
alleles.
2. Place one pink bead and one purple bead in Cup 2. This pair of beads represents the
male parent’s alleles.

Procedure for Lab #3:

1. Place one pink bead and one purple bead in Cup 1. This pair of beads represents the
female parent’s alleles.
2. Place one pink bead and one purple bead in Cup 2. This pair of beads represents the
male parent’s alleles.
