Methodology: Department of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering

This document describes the methodology for two experiments: 1) Determining the force, work, and power of a fan cart. A dynamics track was set up horizontally and a fan cart was placed on it. Strings attached weights to the fan cart over a pulley to balance the force. Photogates recorded the time taken for the cart to travel between set points. Trials were repeated with different distances. 2) Measuring work done by a force along a curved path. A string attached a mass to an iron stand via a spring balance. The initial height, exerted force, angle, and final height were measured for different angled trials.

METHODOLOGY

In conducting this lab activity the

materials and equipment used in making the
experiments are as follows: 1 set dynamics
track, 1pc fan cart, 2pcs photogates, 1pc
protractor, 1pc meter stick, 1 set of weights,
1 iron stand, 1 pc spring balance, and smart
timer.
For the first part of the experiment
entitled as Determining the Force, Work,
and Power of the Fan Cart, the assembly
are as follows: a dynamics track was placed
in a horizontal level and the fan cart was
placed on top of it. Strings were attached to
one end of the hook of the fan cart and the
other end was linked to the pan over a
frictionless pulley. Some weights were
added to the pan in order for the fan cart to
move. The weights were adjusted while the
fan cart is working to balance the force
applied.
And the weights used were
recorded as the force (F) of the fan cart.
Next, two photogates were set in their

desired position from a starting point and the

ending point. Smart timer cables were
attached to the photogates in order to record
the time travelled of the fan cart. Lastly, the
previous steps was repeated, but with
different distances for each trial.
For the second part of the experiment
entitled as Work by a Force on a Curved
Path, the set up done are as follows: String
was tied in the iron stand and measured the
initial height by the meter stick. A mass was
attached to the other end of the string and
pulled using the spring balance to record the
force exerted. At the same time, the angle
formed, and the final height were measured
using
protractor
and
meter
stick,
respectively. Afterwards, the steps were
repeated for each trial but with different
angle.
