Studyguide

The document provides information about the scientific method and conducting observations and experiments. It discusses the steps of the scientific method which are asking a question, forming a hypothesis, performing an experiment and collecting data, analyzing the data, and drawing a conclusion. It also differentiates between qualitative and quantitative observations and examples of each. The document includes examples of applying the scientific method to test the hypothesis that plants grow faster under red lights.

Scientific Method Study Guide

An observation is when we use our five (5) senses OR scientific tools

to gather information
There are to types of observations.
Qualitative Observations describes the qualities of something by
using your five (5) senses. (Color, shape, size, texture, etc.)
Quantitative Observations involves using numbers, counting,
measuring or using scientific tools to gather information.
Scientific Method is the steps we use to answer questions and solve
problems
1. Ask a question
2. Form a hypothesis
3. Perform an experiment and collet data
4. Analyze data
5. Draw a conclusion
Hypothesis is an educated guess.
Experiment is when we test our hypothesis to see if it is right or
wrong.
Data is the information or results we collect during an experiment
Conclusion is when we summarize our data and make a final
statement.
Directions: Read each sentence below then indicate your answer with
either the letter L for qualitative observation, or the letter N
for an quantitative observation.
1. ______ The cup had a mass of 4 ounces.
2. ______ The temperature outside is 250F.
3. _______ It is cold outside.
4. ______ The tree is 10 feet tall.
5. ______ The building has 5 stories.
6. _______ The building is taller than the tree.

7. ______ The sidewalk is long.
8. ______ The sidewalk is 100 feet long.
Directions: Read each of the findings carefully and label whether it
is a questions (Q), hypothesis (H), experiment (E), data (D) or
conclusion (C).
_____
If plants reflect green light, then they must absorb red
light (the opposite of green) and thus grow faster under red lights.
_____
Plant Specimen - Light color:
Growth Yellow Hibiscus - Green light: +9.4cm, Red light: +12.2cm,
Blue light: 11.9cm
Golden Sage - Green light: +6.6cm, Red light: +8.1cm, Blue light:
+7.1cm
Soybean Plant - Green light: +7.4cm, Red light: +10.1cm, Blue light:
+10.0cm
Common Gardenia - Green light: +5.1cm, Red light: +6.9cm, Blue light:
+6.9cm
_____
I will place 4 different plants under green lights and
compare their growth over a month with identical plants under red
and blue lights.
_____
Which color lights cause plants to grow more effectively?
_____
The results of this experiment showed that green light
was the least effective color for growing our plants. Blue and red
lights caused the greatest amount of growth.
