Assignment 9

This document provides the guidelines for Assignment #9 in the ME 321 Mechanics of Materials course. It includes 3 beam loading problems to solve involving shear and bending moment diagrams as well as calculating tensile and compressive stresses. One of the 3 problems will be graded out of 40 points. The problems reference textbook exercises and require drawing labeled shear and bending moment diagrams, determining maximum stresses, and selecting alternative beam shapes.

Guidelines
Solve the problems listed below on separate sheets of paper. DO NOT write on this
assignment page.
Print out this assignment page and staple it to the front of your homework submission.
NOTE: ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS WILL BE GRADED FOR A TOTAL OF 40
POINTS.
1. The beam is supported by a smooth pin at A and a roller at B. The cross section is
a T shape and the dimensions are shown below.
A) Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the beam. LABEL ALL
PERTINENT POINTS ON THE DIAGRAMS. Use straight edges and
templates to draw neat diagrams.
B) Determine the maximum tensile and compressive stresses in the beam and
identify the location, i.e., the horizontal (x) position assuming x = 0 at the left
end of the beam. SHOW ALL WORK.

2. Textbook, Prob. 7.54. Also, calculate the maximum tensile and compressive
stresses if the beam is a S381x74. Include complete V/M diagrams.
3.

Textbook, Prob. 7.55. Also, choose the lightest weight Structural Tee shaped
beam from Table B-11 for this application if the beam will be made of A36 steel.
Include a factor of safety of 3. Include complete V/M diagrams
