Expanding Brackets 1

- The document discusses expanding linear brackets into quadratic expressions by using the FOIL or grid methods - It provides examples of expanding expressions like (x + 2)(x + 3) and (x + 3)2 - Key terms mentioned include: expand, brackets, factorise, quadratic - Students should practice expanding brackets into quadratic expressions and be careful with signs when doing so

Algebra Grade C/B

By the end of this lesson you will:
- expand two linear brackets to give a quadratic
expression
Key words: expand, brackets, factorise, quadratic

Starter:
Expand these: Factorise these:
a) 3 (4x + 2) a) 24x + 12
b) -2 (2x – 8) b) -3x + 9
c) 3x (x – 1) c) 4x2 + 2x
A quadratic expression is one in which the highest power is 2
eg. x2+ 3x + 1

An expression such as (x + 2) (x + 3) can be expanded

to give a quadratic expression – this is called
quadratic expansion.

There are various methods for doing this – I will show

you 2 and you can chose whichever one you feel most
comfortable with.
Method 1
FOIL – first, outer, inner, last
(x + 3) (x + 4)
Method 2
The Grid method
(x + 3) (x + 4)

x +3

=x2 + 3x + 4x + 12
x x2 3x
= x2 + 7x + 12

+4 4x 12
Try it for yourself...

Exercise

Be careful with the signs:

+x+=+
-x-=+
+x-=-
-x+=-
Expanding Squares
Question: expand (x + 3)2

Method: (x + 3) (x + 3)
=…

Be really careful – you must write down each bracket twice

Exercise 12D, page 283

If this is easy, start at question 9
Exam Question Tip:
Work this out:
(x + 3) ( x – 3) = x2 - 9

This is called the

difference of 2 squares

Which of these are the difference of two squares?

x2+ 3x – 4
x2 – 4
4x2 – y2
5x2 + 3x - 9
