SM-Proe.ST.02 Heat Treatment Procedure —_ Page 6 of 15 6.7 _ Ifthe wall thickness exceeds 25 mm and preheating is to be done from the same side as the welding, then the heat source shall be removed for 1 minute to allow for temperature equalization prior to measuring the temperatature. 6.8 Unless specified otherwise, the maximum interpass temperature shall be 177°C for P-No. 8 materials and 315°C for P-No, 1 steels. 7.0. POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT 7A PWHT (Post weld Heat Treatment) is the heating of steel to a relatively high temperature shortly after welding and maintaining that temperature for a specific period of time. It is to reduce internal stresses caused by Welding. It also has an advantageous effect on the elasticity, ductility and strength of the metal, 7.2 PWHT shall be in accordance with the Para 2, Reference and this procedure, 7.3. The request shall include Tank No., Nozzle, Drawing No., Wall thickness, Heating rate, Materials etc and provide all the information for each joint that needs PWHT. 7.4 PWHT shall be carried out within a temperature range of 600°C to 650°C for 1 7.5 The heating and cooling rate above 316°C shall not exceed 222°C per hour divided by the weld thickness in inches, but in no case shall it be more than 222*Citr. 7.6 Insulation for PWHT shall be needed on either side of the weld, minimum of 300mm. (2) If two or more welds are heat-treated together with the same temperature range and recorded on the same temperature chart, the different color line shall be Identified to clarify on the PWHT temperature chart for each weld. Temperature Control 8.1. Each circuit of heating elements shall be controlled either by 8 contactor or suitable solid state switching circuit 8.2 Circuit control system 8.2.1 Semi-automatic contro} ‘A combination of a set-point controller and a timer regulator for correct temperature control during the soaking period. 8.2.2 Automatic pre-set control unit It controls the heating temperature automatically throughout its process. 9. Thermocouple 9.4 Only Type K (Chromel-Alumel) or Type J (Iron-Constantan) thermocouples are permitted. All extension cables, compensating cables, and jumper cables In the measurement or control circuits shall be the specified thermocouple wire or the matching extension wire (Le, KX or JX as appropriate). 9.2 For Type K thermocouples, copper-constantan (Type T) compensating cables may be used with the following conditions (1) The junction between the copper-constantan compensating cable and the ‘Type K thermocouple lead shail be a minimum of 0.5m outside the insulated area. (2) The acceptable temperature range of the junction between the compensating cable and the thermocouple lead is from 0 to +80°C. It is important to ensure that the thermocouple conductor wires do not touch each other, or metallic components, away from the hot junction 9.6 Thermocouple shall be attached to the component by capacitive discharge welding and other methods of attachment are not used. 9.7. Thermocouple attachments shall be of the capacity discharge connection method and located on the weld center line. All thermocouple attachments shall be adequately insulated to avoid temperature misreading caused by the effect of radiation. Attachment points on the weld reinforcement shall be dressed by grinding light only to allow good thermocouple contact. 9.8 Upon completion of the heat treatment, the thermocouple shall be removed and the areas of attachment ground to clean and if specified by the inspector, the areas shall be examined by PT or MT. 9.9 Localized PWHT of Nozzle on tank is used, the following minimum number of equally spaced recording thermocouple (T/C) shall be used (1) Nozzle or Pad diameter of 305mm or less: 1 T/C, (2) Nozzle or Pad diameter above 305mm up to and including 610mm :2 TIC. (3) Nozzle or Pad diameter above 610mm : 3 T/C. Temperature Recorder 10.1 All charts shall be marked with the date and sufficient information to uniquely identify the joints or components that are heat treated, Multipoint chart recorders shall clearly differentiate/identify each channel/point by use of different colored inks. 10.2 Temperature recorders shall be calibrated every 12 months and a current calibration sticker shall be maintained on the recorder. 10.3. The chart speed shall be set at 25mm or 50mm per hour and shall be checked during calibration. No artificial restriction or acceleration on pen travel shall be used. 10.4 A clear print out of data shall be demonstrated before commencement of a PWHT cycle. Any section of the time-temperature chert must only record the heat treatment of butt welds subjected to the same temperature cycle. The chart speed shall be checked at the start of every PWHT cycle, and noted on the strip chart by the PWHT technician 11. Insulation 14.4. Ceramic fiber blanket with a minimum thickness of 19mm (0.75 in) and a minimum density of 96kg/m*, or an equivalent of silica fiber shall be used for insulation. 14.2 Mineral wool 50mm (1.97 in) thick, density 90 kg/m may be utilized as an Altemative. 14.3 Insulation shall extend for a minimum distance of 6 times the shell thickness each side of the weld centerline or for 2 minimum distance of 300mm (12 in) beyond the outermost edges of the heated band whichever is the greater. Special procedures, shall be written for heat treatment applications where it is desirable or necessary to reduce the extent of gradient insulation. 11.4 Insulation is to be applied to the inside surface of the shell plates over an equivalent area. 14.5 Insulation can be applied to the bore for larger size nozzles. 11.6 The number of layers may be adjusted to meet the variations of shell nozzle or pad diameter and site conditions. ness. Safety 12.1. Heating elements shall be thoroughly examined before use in order to ensure that the element wire is not exposed. Examination shall also be made for broken beads in both the heating element and the leads 12.2 Twist lock connections shall also be examined to ensure that the insulation is sound and that a positive electrical joint is made. 12.3 All cable connections shall be properly insulated. 12.4 The component surface shall be free of contaminants. 12.5 Reference shall be made to the safety requirements pertinent to the work being carried ut and to the work location/customer rules and regulations. 12.6 Before @ heat treatment application is commenced particular attention shall be paid to the work area to ensure that there are no combustible materials present, which can bbe affected by the heated zone, and that fire protection measures are available, 13. Reporting and Documentation 13.1. The complete temperature cycle of heating, soaking and cooling shall be recorded on a chart. 13.2 Temperature chart shall be fully identified with respect to material, nozzle or pad No., drawing and thermocouple heat arrangement. 13.3. Any discrepancy shall be reported. 13.4. After the PWHT is completed, the temperature chart shall be reviewed and approved by customer inspector. HARDNESS TEST 14.1. General Heat Treatment Procedure Page 12 0f 15 Production hardness test is mandatory after heat treatment and shall be performed on 10 % of welds in each furnace heat treated and 100% of those which are locally heat treated, Unless otherwise required hardness test results shall not exceed 225 HB for P No. 1, 3 and 4, 5A materials after PWHT, and heat affected zone hardness does not exceed the average unaffected base metal hardness by more than 10%. The hardness limits shall be applied to both the weld and heat affected zone as close as practicable to the edge of the weld. Personnel performing hardness te shall be far r with all hardness testing procedure and test methods, Hardness test should be performed by trained personnel. 14.2. Testing Method It may be used Ultra Sonic Hardness Tester 14,3.
