The document describes the key processes involved in the formation of sedimentary rock: weathering breaks down rocks into sediments, erosion transports rock fragments, deposition allows sediments to settle out of water or wind, compaction presses sediments together under layers of overlying material, and cementation occurs when minerals crystallize between particles and glue them together to form sedimentary rock.

Flowchart Weathering (Break Apart) The breaking down of rocks into sediments.
Erosion (Wash Away)
Forces running water, wind, or ice loosen & carry away fragments of rock from one place to another.
Deposition (Drop Down)
Sediments settle out of the water or wind carrying them & they sink to the bottom of the lake or ocean
Compaction (Smashed Together)
Process that presses sediments together. Thick layers of sediment build up over time & weigh down the layers compacting the sediments.
Cementation (Glued Together)
Process in which dissolved minerals crystallize & glue particles of sediment together, dissolved minerals seep into the spaces between particles & then harden Concepts and Challenges in Physical Science, Teachers Resources CD-ROM (c) by Pearson Education, Inc./Globe Fearon/Pearson Learning Group.
