Advanced Structural Analysis Assignment 2

This document contains two analysis assignments. The first asks to identify boundary conditions, write the weak, Galerkin, and finite element forms of a given PDE, and construct the stiffness matrix and force vector using basis functions. The second assignment involves a propped cantilever beam and asks to write the potential energy functional and obtain the governing differential equation.

1. Consider the partial differential equation:

the boundary conditions:

subject to

( 0 )=0 ( 1 )=0. Identify the essential and natural

boundary conditions for this problem. Write down the weak form, the Galerkin form
and the finite element form of the above equation. Assuming the minimum number of
basis functions necessary for the space of variations, construct the stiffness matrix and
force vector.
2. The propped cantilever beam shown in the figure has a translational spring with
spring stiffness KT and rotational spring with spring stiffness KR at the propped end.
Write down an expression for the potential energy functional . Obtain the governing
differential equation.
