Whole Class Lesson 2

This lesson plan outlines a physical education class on discus throwing techniques. The plan details stretching exercises to prepare students, followed by instruction on proper discus grip and throwing form. Students will practice in pairs, with the teacher monitoring their techniques. The goal is for students to correctly throw a discus in preparation for an upcoming athletics carnival, evaluated by their ability to apply proper form. Adaptations are noted for one student requiring extra assistance.

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)

ACPM080: Use feedback to improve body control/coordination when performing specialised movement skills.

ACPMP081: Compose and perform movement sequences for specific purposes.

ACPMP082: Practise, apply and transfer movement concepts and strategies.

Students prior knowledge and experience:

-
-

Prior experience in athletics events and carnivals throughout schooling.

Likely they have participated in discus events in the past and thus will have some knowledge about
how the sport works and what techniques to use.
Prior experience practicing Athletics Field Events in Physical Education lessons and thus familiar with
the structure of the lesson.

Learning purpose:

-
-

Examining and demonstrating strategies and techniques used in discus.

Designing and performing movement sequences correctly to perform activity effectively and safely.

Learning objectives:

Evaluation:

On completion of this lesson, students will be

able to:

(Explain how you will know that lesson objective have

been achieved / monitor student learning)

Throw a discus using the correct

techniques and abiding to the rules of
the sport.

- Students are able to throw discus using the correct

technique.
- Students throw discus successfully and display
promising measurements.

Preparation and Resources:

Resources
- Discuses
- Cones
- Whistle
- Preparation
- Prepare enough discuses and cones for the class.
- Make sure discus section of field is available for use.
- Make sure all students are wearing appropriate sporting gear.

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource adjustments)

One student with behavioural problem; does not like change. So be ready for teacher to step in and
assist student.

Make sure all students fully understand instructions given at all times.

Make sure all students willing to participate and there are no relevant exemptions that need to be
made.

Learning Experiences:

1. Introduction: (How will I engage the learners?)

-
-

Inform students that today they will be practicing discus techniques in preparation for the
athletics carnival on Friday.
Sternly tell them that they must follow teacher instructions at all times, never putting
anyone at risk by blatantly disregarding instructions.

2. Sequence of learning experiences: (What will you do to help the students achieve

the learning objectives? What tasks and activities will the students be involved in
to help achieve the learning objectives?)

Stretching (3 - 4 minutes)

1. Arm swings

Stand tall, feet somewhat wider than shoulderwidth apart, knees unlocked.
Keep your back straight at all times.
Overhead/Down and back - Swing both arms
forward at the same time to an overhead
position and then forward again, down, and
backwards.

2. Deltoid stretch
-

Begin this exercise standing tall with your back and

neck straight.
Gently take your arm across your body using your other
arm to take it a little further.
Hold at a mild to moderate stretch pain free for 15
seconds. Swap arms.

3. Triceps stretch
-

Reach your left arm over your head, placing your left
hand on the front of your right elbow. Gently pull your
right elbow back until you feel a nice tension.
Bend your left elbow and repeat the stretch with your
left arm (15 seconds per side).

4. Elephant swings
-

Stretch your left hand to your right foot and stretch your
other arm towards the sky. After 2 seconds repeat this
process with opposite arm and leg.
Repeat this action for 30 seconds.

5. Standing Quadriceps Stretch
-

Stretch foot towards buttocks. Hold for 15 seconds.

Swap legs.

Teaching the Discus Technique

- Students choose pairs and stand behind a cone (Amount of cones relative to
student attendance).
- For each drill one partner in pair will practice technique shown, swapping on
whistle (or other given instruction) and next partner will attempt drill.

Drill 1: Grip

-
-
-
-

Place the left hand under the discus for support

Place the right hand on top of the discus
Spread the fingers evenly but not stretched
The first joint of the fingers curling over the rim of the
discus
- Do not to grip the discus
- Allow the discus to rest on the first joint of the fingers
with the tips of the fingers over the rim.

- Discus must leave pinkie finger last.

- For this exercise students will flick discus in an upward
motion (about 30cm) and catch again. This is to practice
the gripping motion.

Drill 2: Roll

-
-

Drill 3: Swing

Drill 4: Stance

-
-

Instruct students to roll the discus vertically in front of

them along the grass.
The purpose of this exercise is to perfect the grip
technique and practise the release technique.
Students collect discus when whistle is blown.
Roll on whistle. Retrieve when whistle blown twice.

- Hold the discus high in front of the left shoulder. Swing

the discus back toward the right shoulder.
- Rotate your torso clockwise, bringing the discus as far
back as you can.
- Your non-throwing arm should be pointed in the
opposite direction as your throwing arm.

- Students practice swing technique 3 times each.

Stand parallel to throwing area, legs apart with your throwing hand furthest
from intended throwing area.

Power position: Assume the power position, with your left side planted and
firm, and your left arm pointing forward. Your weight should be shifting from
your right side to your left (vice versa if left is throwing arm). Your throwing
arm should be behind you, outstretched, with the discus at about hip level.
Upon rotation, left leg (if right is your throwing hand, and vice versa) pivots
inwards to form a box shape.
Swing throwing arm outwards towards throwing area, straightening pivot in
the process (legs slightly bent at all times).
Push back leg upward, lifting up off the ground to produce power in the
throw.

-
-
-

Drill 5: mock throw
- Putting everything in to practice.
- Assume stance as above and swing 3 times before releasing.
- Continue shifting your weight forward as you pivot your hips. Bring your arm
up at approximately a 35-degree angle to release the discus. The discus should

leave your hand smoothly off the pinkie finger with your hand at about
shoulder height.

Throw on whistle.
Discus retrieved when whistle is blown twice.

Throwing circle explanation

-

Foot cannot touch front half of circle during or after

throw, as it will result in a foul.
Discus must be thrown within the confines of the
vertical lines extending from the circle.
Circle must be exited out back. Students must
cross over line dividing circle halves before
exiting.
Prepare tape measure for final throws.

10:19 am Final Throw

- Students will each have an opportunity to throw the discus within the lines,

using proper technique.
10-15
- Distances will be measured and recorded.
mins

- Aim for once per student, if extra time, another throw can be attempted.

10:35 am
3. Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the

lesson objectives?)

10:45 am

-
-
-
-

Congratulate students on their efforts to perfect their discus throwing technique.

Relay one more time that the success of discus lies in the layout of the throw.
Wish them luck for the Athletics Carnival on Friday.

Allow 5-10 minutes for students to go back to change rooms.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)

-
-
-

Overall lesson went well, students were engaged and managed to carry out discus
techniques and skills effectively.
While some students struggled with carrying out proper technique, they were still able to
demonstrate their understanding and responded well to positive feedback on the things
they were doing right.
Emphasis placed on proper technique and safety rather than the distance students were
able to throw the discus, this resulted in a relaxed environment students were not in
competition with one another.

Amount of students in class was greater than normal and had to re-adjust lesson plan to
make it groups of 3 behind cones rather than pairs.

No behavioural issues, only mild chatting at times that was easily controlled.
