Weekly Spelling Program

Term 3, Year 4, Winthrop Primary School


ACARA
Understand how to use strategies for spelling words, including spelling rules, knowledge of morphemic word families, spelling generalisations, and letter
combinations including double letters (ACELA1779)
Monday
Spelling Test
Students are divided into different spelling list groups. Each group is given a new list of spelling words weekly.
Words are called out one by one and put into sentences, students are to write their attempt in spelling books.
All students are given a copy of their spelling words and mark their partners work.
Tuesday (alternate each week)
Magic Boxes
This activity is aimed at focusing on the sounds that are in words. Using their spelling list words students are
required to show the sounds in each word.
Students are given half a sheet of graph paper and in each square write the different sounds within a word
they hear. For example stream. st r ea m all in a different square.
Synonyms and Antonyms
Using a spider web template, students choose five words from their spelling list. Depending on the week
students are asked to write three synonyms or antonyms for each word.
Wednesday (alternate each week)
Sentence Conversation
First lesson requires a template of four speech bubbles and four faces. Each week after will be completed in
spelling books.
Students are to write sentences with at least one word from their spelling list. The sentences need to be in the
form of a conversation and respond to each other. Spelling list words should be underlined.
Sentences and Dictionary
Using spelling list words students are required to create various sentences for five different words.
The words they choose from their list must then be used to find dictionary meanings.
Thursday
Syllables
Students need to use their spelling list words and find the syllables in each word.
They need to use a different colour pen for each syllable to show the understanding of syllables clearly.
Soundwaves activity
Students are given a sheet from soundwaves which has various questions regarding the sounds in words.
Friday
Odd and Even Testing
Assessment

All students have spelling test books. Each alternate week either the odd group or even group will be tested
on the spelling list for that week. It is partner testing therefore each student will be tested by their peer.
