OVP Topic Search Reports

Assignment Purpose:
To pass senior English you must complete the Opposing Viewpoints Project (OVP),
which includes both a well researched and properly MLA formatted research paper
AND a formal debate with one of your peers. To help prepare you for this task we
want to give you the opportunity to research various debate topics that you find
genuinely interesting, while also having you practice the skills youll need to be
successful in completing this project. These easy 1-page reports, when done well,
should guarantee a reduction in your stress over completing this project.
Assignment Instructions:

Every week, for 6 weeks, you will search for an article that pertains to a topic
you would like to debate with another individual.

Once you have found and read an article you like, you will type an MLA
formatted paraphrase of this article:
o Your paraphrased report must follow MLA guidelines and begin with a MLA
citation of your article/source.

Use the sample Topic Search Reports on Blackboard to help you properly
format your report.

Every report should be about a different topic.

Every report MUST NOT exceed 1 typed page.

The purpose is for you to explore various topics youre interested in to help
you better choose a topic for the actual OVP Project.

To keep from exceeding the page limit, make sure you are paraphrasing only
the important and necessary information for your topic. Do NOT bullet point
information. You must write in complete sentences in paragraph form.
Reports exceeding 1 page will not be accepted and must be resubmitted as a
late assignment.

Appropriate Websites/Databases to Find Topics:

When searching for a debate topic, use ONLY the following websites/databases.
Also, makes sure the topics you are selecting can be debated (ie. human trafficking
is not a debatable topic).

Points:
40pts
30pts

Task:
Report is typed and does not exceed 1-page. (Nothing
should be handwritten.)
Your paraphrase is a genuine paraphrase of the article,
not a full summary of the article.

20pts

Properly MLA Formatted with NO Errors. (No half credit)

10pts

MLA Citation is not missing any information and is

correctly formatted. (No half credit)

The rubric will be strictly followed. This means that if you handwrite your header,
you will lose 40pts. AND/OR if your MLA Citation is missing a period, you will lose
10pts. The purpose of this harshness is to help you hone the skills to properly
format an MLA paper; you will absolutely need these skills next year in
college/university.
If you lose points, you will have the opportunity to correct and resubmit your Topic
Search Report to earn half credit back. A resubmission is due at the beginning of the
next class. It is your responsibility to turn this resubmission in (I will NOT remind you
to turn it in); otherwise, you will receive your original grade.

**The Due Date means the assignment is due at the beginning of your class period on
this day, otherwise its a late assignment and must be submitted with a signed Late Work
