07 - Solving Linear Systems by Elimination 1 Student Notes

The method of elimination is used to solve linear systems by adding or subtracting equations to eliminate a variable. If the coefficients of a variable have opposite signs, the equations are added to eliminate that variable. If the coefficients are equal, the equations are subtracted. For example, to eliminate the x-variable from 3y + 2x = 6 and 5y - 2x = 10, the equations would be added since the x coefficients are opposites. This would give 8y + 0 = 16, solving for y = 2. Then y = 2 can be substituted back in to find x. Checking the solution verifies it satisfies both original equations.

LESSON NOTES

METHOD OF ELIMINATION 1
Another way of solving a linear system is to use the elimination method.
In the elimination method you either add or subtract the equations to
get an equation in one variable.
When the coefficients of one variable are opposites you add the
equations to eliminate a variable and when the coefficients of one
variable are equal you subtract the equations to eliminate a variable.

3y + 2x = 6
5y 2x = 10

Check (0,2)
3y + 2x = 6
x 2y = -2
LS = 3(2) + 2(0) = 6 + 0 = 6
x 2(3) = -2
RS = 6
x 6 = -2
x = -2 + 6
5y 2x = 10
