Tech 2060 Practice Session-3

This document contains 7 practice questions about calculating machining parameters such as RPM, cutting speed, and feed rate for various metal cutting operations. The questions involve operations like turning, face milling, and end milling on materials like machine steel, 1018 steel, 4140 alloy steel, and low-alloy steel. Parameters calculated include RPM settings, machining time, and estimated cutting speeds.

Practice Session-3
1. Calculate r/min required to rough-turn 2 in. diameter piece of machine steel (CS 90).

2. Calculate the time required to machine a 2-in. diameter machine-steel shaft 16 in. long to
1.850-in diameter finish size. Assume one rough pass and one finish pass.

3. A milling cut is to be taken with a 0.500 inch high speed steel (HSS) endmill on a piece
of 1018 steel with a brinnel hardness of 200. Calculate the RPM setting to perform this
cut.

4. A milling cut is to be taken with a 3.00 inch carbide face milling cutter using coated
inserts on a piece of 4140 alloy steel with a brinnel hardness of 200. Calculate the RPM
setting to perform this cut.

5. A milling cut is to be taken with a 3.00 inch carbide face milling cutter using coated
inserts. If the RPM setting is 530 rpm, calculate the cutting speed.

6. For a 4 diameter, six-tooth end mill, using carbide inserts, the work material is low-alloy
steel, annealed (BHN = 200). Determine rpm at the spindle and the feed rate of the table.

7. In a metal cutting experimentation, the tool life was found to vary with cutting speed in
the following manner:
Cutting speed, V, m/min
Tool Life, T, min
100
120
130
50
Estimate the cutting speed for a tool life of 80 minutes.
