A question usually starting with the word Should will be asked. You will need to take a stance on this
issue. Do you agree with it? Disagree with it? Or partially agree with it?
Three citizens will respond to the question. Read their responses carefully. Their response should help
prompt you to write a response outlining your point of view on the same question.
The following should be considered a guide to help you complete the assignment. However, it is
important to REMEMBER THERE IS NO ONE WAY TO RESPOND TO THIS ASSIGNMENT BUT ALL THE PARTS
MUST BE COMPLETED.

1. Explore and analyze the issue by doing the following

Explain what the issue is about. What makes the issue important?

Describe the various points of view on the issue

Consider the points of view of the three citizens and use them to help with your
analysis. Do not copy what they say or simply express agreement with one of the
citizens. (eg. I think Citizen II describes why this issue is important.)

Explain why there are different points of view on the issue. Once again consider the
reasons given by the three citizens and use this as a prompt to help you describe your
reasons.

2. Explain and defend your position on the issue.

Start each paragraph with a statement explaining why you have taken your position.

Provide examples from your knowledge of Social Studies to prove why your position
should be supported. Make sure your examples are specific, detailed and accurate.
Show off how much social studies you know!

End your paragraph with a concluding sentence explaining how your examples prove
your argument (your first sentence) and your position.

3. Communication:

An essay format will probably work best for this assignment.

Most students will probably write 3 to 4 paragraphs one for exploring the issue and
identifying the various points of view, one or two paragraphs for your arguments (two
is preferable) and one for the conclusion.

Paragraphs have introductory sentences and concluding sentences.

Social Studies terminology & vocabulary should be included you are marked on it.

Ensure your writing is organized with grammar and mechanics corrected.

Correct sentence structure is expected.
