Amplitude Modulation

Amplitude modulation encodes information as variations in the amplitude of a carrier wave. The amplitude of the carrier wave varies between a maximum and minimum value depending on the amplitude of the modulating signal. This results in the carrier frequency splitting into a carrier wave along with sidebands at sums and differences of the carrier and modulating signal frequencies. The power of an amplitude modulated signal is distributed between the carrier wave and sideband frequencies according to the modulation index.
