Earthfill Dam Breach Analysis

GEI has analyzed flood inundation from dam breaches on over 20 earthfill dams using hydrologic models like DAMBRK, HEC-1, HEC-2, and HEC-RAS. The dam breach models indicate downstream water levels and flooded areas resulting from different breach scenarios like probable maximum floods or dam failures. GEI has performed these analyses for earthfill dams of varying heights, as well as roller-compacted concrete, concrete gravity, and rockfill dams. The results are used to develop emergency plans and warning systems.

Earthll Dam Breach Analysis

Various States

GEI has analyzed flood

inundation due to
dam overtopping and
dam breach on over
20 earthfill dams using
the National Weather
Services DAMBRK
model or a combination
of HEC-1, HEC-2, and
HEC-RAS hydrologic
models.
These analyses indicate the
downstream maximum water
surface and inundated area.
The dam breach models use
data on the initial and breach
conditions at the dam and the
geometry of the downstream
floodplain to produce maximum
flood-water flows and velocities,
flood-wave arrival times,
elevations, and inundated areas.
GEI has modeled Probable
Maximum Flood (PMF) and
sunny day dam breach conditions,
and breaches in both single and
multiple dams. In addition to
earthfill dams, GEI has performed
dam breach analyses for rollercompacted concrete, concrete

gravity, and rockfill embankments

with heights ranging from 16 to
340 feet. The results are used to
determine effects of flooding on
urban centers and major roadways
and also in development of
Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
and Early Warning Systems (EWS).
