CBR Intro - Procedures Echcbra

The document discusses the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test, which measures the mechanical strength of soils used for roads and airstrips. The CBR test involves measuring the pressure required to penetrate a soil sample with a standard piston, and dividing it by the pressure to penetrate a crushed rock sample. This ratio produces a CBR value, with higher values indicating stronger soils. Soil strength can be rated on the CBR scale, from 3 for tilled farmland to over 80 for high quality crushed rock. The document then describes the objective, apparatus, and procedures for conducting a CBR test to determine the CBR value of a soil sample.

0 INTRODUCTION
The California bearing ratio (CBR) is a penetration test for evaluation of
the mechanical strength of road subgrades and base courses. The test is
performed by measuring the pressure required to penetrate a soil sample
with a plunger of standard area. The measured pressure is then divided by
the pressure required to achieve an equal penetration on a standard crushed
rock material. The CBR rating was developed for measuring the loadbearing capacity of soils used for building roads. The CBR can also be used
for measuring the load-bearing capacity of unimproved airstrips or for soils
under paved airstrips. The harder the surface, the higher the CBR rating. A
CBR of 3 equates to tilled farmland, a CBR of 4.75 equates to turf or moist
clay, while moist sand may have a CBR of 10. High quality crushed rock has
a CBR over 80. The only calculation necessary is :
CBR = (measured force / standard force ) x 100 %

2.0 OBJECTIVE

To determine the CBR value of soil sample.

4.0 PROCEDURES
1. Normally 3 specimens each of about 7 kg must be compacted so that
their compacted densities range from 95% to 100% generally with 10,
30 and 65 blows.
2. The empty mould is weighed
3. The water added to the first specimen (compact it in five layer by

giving 10 blows per layer)

After compaction, the collar was removed and level the surface.
The sample was taken for determination of moisture content.
The mould + compacted specimen is weighed.
The mould is removed and take the sample to the cbr machine
The mould is removed from the tank and allow water to drain.
Then the specimen is placed under the penetration piston and place

surcharge load of 10lb.

10.
The load and note the penetration load values is applied.
11.
The graphs between the penetration (in) and penetration load
(in) is plotted and the value of CBR is recorded.
12.
The graph between the % age CBR and Dry Density is plotted,
and theCBR at degree of compaction is recorded.
