Cesar Trejo and Stacy Joslin took a U.S. History course where they learned about important events and social movements that changed society over time. One topic discussed was the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School, where nine black students faced discrimination but helped end segregation through their courageous actions. The course also covered ongoing issues of racism and police brutality today. As their final project, the students are researching problems in society and individuals who tried to enact positive change, such as Sargent Shriver who founded the Head Start program to help underprivileged children.

U.S History
End of Course Reflection

Can one person make a difference in a society of 300+

million people?
In U.S. HIstory I learned many facts about the past and how the world changed as time
was passing. The world still has some issues that havent been fixed, but people are starting
small to change the world. For example: The Little Rock 9, nine black students were chosen to
go to a white school. At that time there was discrimination against the blacks and segregation.
Some white students and parents didnt want the blacks to go to the school, so they would bully
and threaten the blacks. After years of discrimination and segregation, it finished and it started
from some people starting small to change that. In this topic I learned that the key word is time
because it takes time to make a change and have hope while wanting to change a problem.
A topic that the U.S. History class learned about is current events regarding Racism and
Police Brutality. In the topic I learned that racism still exists today and somewhat the history has
changed. Today, blacks are mostly targeted, for example: Michael Brown was shot by the
police, Eric Garner was killed because he was held in a headlock and he couldnt breathe. After
Mike Browns death there were people rioting and protesting and saying that the police are
being racist. Police Brutality rates has increased because there are many videos of it. This will
impact my future because when I grow older I can teach people of the history of racism and
police brutality and how it affects the society.

Last, but not least, in U.S. History we are doing an Upstander Project. What that is, is we
have to find a problem that we see or are interested in. We have to do research and we can use

it for our Service Learning Project or Senior Project. Before the project we were looking at
problems that people have tried making a change. For example: Shiver went to fight in the war
because he liked helping people, he did it just to help he didnt want anything or wasnt
expecting anything. Many people gathered up and donated money so he can go to college.
Wanted everyone to be equal and he started a program to help children with education which is
Head Start. This will impact my future because I also like helping people and I can try to get
some people help to make the world a better world.
