The Sled Run
One day it snowed like crazy! So school
was cancelled. I had Amy over to play. We
decided to go sledding. So we started to
slide down the hill. We sledded for a long
time.One time we decided to go down
together. Amy sat in the front seat and I sat
in the back. We started to go down the hill.
Then CRASH! We ran into a bush! Amy
went flying and I got my feet caught in the
bush! Amy looked like a spider caught in its
own spider web. I had a lot of fun that day,
and I will never forget it!

Shape of a paragraph
A paragraph has a special shape. There are
two basic rules for the shape of a paragraph.
Thefirstrule is that each paragraph is
separated from the other paragraphs.
Thesecondrule is that the sentences in a
paragraph follow each other on the same
line.

You should be able to see where a paragraph


begins and ends just by looking at it on the
page.

Topic sentence
A paragraph talks about onemainidea. Amainidea is the

topic of the paragraph. The paragraph


includesspecificdetails and examples about the main idea.
For example, in the paragraph below the main idea is "Mary is
a kind person."
My friend Mary is a very kind person. She likes helping
people. She visits sick people inhospitaland she
spends time reading to young children at thelibrary.
She brings food to her elderly neighbour because he
cannot cook for himself anymore. She takes another
neighbour's dog for a walk because that person is in a
wheelchair. Mary is the kindest person I know.
All the sentences in this paragraph are about how kind Mary
is. This is one of the most important rules for a paragraph:
there should be only one main idea.

Not so good
Sunday is my favourite day of the week.I like it

because on Sunday, I watch football. On other days,


I also get to watch football but not all day.There are
other sports on other days to watch on TV.Sunday
lunch is a favourite of mine because I eat with my
father in front of the TV. All the other days, I have to
eat at the table which is less fun.Some days my
dad doesnt make it home from work until after Im
in bed.Some weeks my dad travels, and I dont see
him for several days. The highlight of the day is
when we watch the Dolphins play. Dad and I get so
excited, we yell and cheer together.The thing that I
like to do best in the world is watch TV with my dad.


Sunday is my favourite day because I
spend the day watching football with my
dad. On Sunday, unlike the other days of
the week when he works, my dad spends
the whole day with me watching football on
TV. We even eat lunch together while
watching. The highlight of the day is
watching the Dolphins game. Dad and I get
so excited, we yell and cheer together. On
Sundays, I get to combine watching my
favourite sport and spending time with my
favourite personwhat a great day!
