RE: Agency Discourse Memo
Dear Ms. Gallardo,
While researching the discourse communities that I selected, I found that there are many
organizations and agencies involved within the discourse communities. One organization
that stood out to me was my high school football team at Coronado High School. This
organization had several impacts for the players, school, and the community that is
involved with the school. For the players it impacted our lives a lot by getting physically
active, and getting involved with the terminology used within the sport. It personally
impacted me by keeping me discipline on managing my time with football and school. It
also impacted me by meeting new people and by making me a part of the tradition at our
school. This organization also impacted peoples lives that were involved in the football
program. Parents from my football team would help us fundraise for new equipment, and
food for when we would travel out of town.
PRACTICES
In this program we would have football practice Monday through Thursday and then have
a game on Friday night. We would also have film sessions regarding our opponent that
week in the mornings Monday through Saturday. Our practices consisted of training and
preparation for the game. This organization can relate to a public issue of obesity. This
sport kept us very fit and healthy. In fact, that was probably the most fit I had ever been
in my life. Although it may not sound like fun to some people because of the time it
requires, it was all worth because it helped me grow as a person and it also allowed me
learn a lot about the sport.
COMMUNICATION
The way we communicated in this organization was very different than from other
discourse communities. The terminology used was very strategic because each play call
had a specific meaning that only us players would know what it actually meant. For
example, during games my coach would call plays from the sidelines and we all had a
specific assignment to perform. Some play names were Fire, Charge double fire,
Banjo, the list goes on.
PURPOSE
This program had many purposes, it represented the school, the Coronado community
and it represented El Paso for when we would travel out of town for games. How we
acted off the field in public directly reflected the kind of people we were. Our team as a
whole always showed respect to our teachers, coaches, and even parents. Every time we
traveled out of town we represented not only Coronado football but also El Paso football.
Unfortunately we were not very good my senior year of high school, but it gave out of
town teams an idea of how good we were and how we acted as a team.
Over all, this organization within the football discourse community affected many
peoples lives that were involved in the program. Out of all of the discourse communities
that I have been a part of, this particular organization affected my life the most in a
positive way.
