Please visit our class website at dutley.weebly.com. There are many activities including
place value games, map skills practice, word study practice and much more that can help
your child practice and review what we have been learning. Reflex math can also be
accessed through the class website. Our weekly newsletter and homework will be posted
here as well.

Interim reports went home with your child on Thursday. Please make sure to sign and
return them to school if you havent already. Thank you if you have returned it already.
PALS reports were also sent home on Thursday with a letter from me explaining the
results. If you have any questions or concerns about your childs scores, please feel free
to contact me at [email protected].
This Wednesday, October 14, our students will be participating in an ART CARPET
project with Ms. Crowder. Please return your permission slips by Tuesday morning.
Fox 2nd Graders are performing at the PTA meeting on Tuesday, October 20 th. If you
have not sent in your childs permission slip, please do so. I look forward to seeing you
there!
Students are doing a great job with homework. Please continue to read with your child
each night and record the titles on the homework page. Word Study homework will
continue as well. It is very important that students say their words out loud as they sort
them to hear the featured sound in their words. Remember, transfer words are included
on the spelling tests. Transfer words are words that are not on the list but have the
same feature or pattern (for example, if their word is light I might give them bright).
I am so happy to hear that many of our students are enjoying Reflex Math. Please help
your child sign in if they have access to internet at home. This is great for practicing
math skills and building fact fluency. This is part of homework so please have your child
visit the website, if possible, 2-3 times per week. If you need me to send your childs
password again, please put a note in their folder.
We have library every Tuesday. Please help your child to remember to bring her/his
library book.
Remember Friday is an early release day. Dismissal will be at 1:45 pm.

Words in Isolation: If you are looking for a way to help your child practice sight words,
please check out the website www.mrsperkins.com to help your child review sight words.
If you click on Dolch Word Lists you will find power points that you can use to practice
on the computer as well as printable flash cards. Second graders should know all the
words beginning with the Pre-primer list through the 2nd grade list.

Heres what we are up to this week

Math: We will continue to practice addition and subtraction facts with sums to 20. We are
practicing strategies to help the students recall those facts. Please practice skip counting
at home with your child. Students need to be able to count by 2s to 20, 5s and 10s to 100
(or more!), and backwards from 20-0. PLEASE practice at home. This is the foundation for
counting money, telling time, and subtraction. We will begin our unit on place value. We will
also review even and odd numbers.
Social Studies: This week we will learn about United States geography including the Rio
Grande River, the Mississippi River, the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains, the
Great Lakes, and the James River. Please have your child continue to review the continents
and oceans on the world map. There is a fun activity on the class website for this!
Language Arts: We will continue our unit on asking questions while we read and finding the
main idea and supporting details in what we read. Work stations will be spelling, Word Study
games, reading, readers response, Word Wall Words, journal writing, and handwriting.
Have a great week!

WORD STUDY HOMEWORK

Monday: Introduce and sort new words
Homework: Students cut out the words and sort (and say) three times. Store in
a plastic bag and use them again each night this week.
Tuesday: Blind Sort
Homework: Your child will sort the words again like yesterday. Then place the
category words (underlined words) on the table. You will then scramble the words
and call them out one at a time. Your child will point to the category in which the
word belongs. Hand the word to your child to place in that column. Check the
sort.
Wednesday: Speed Sort
Homework: Place the category words (underlined words) on the table. Scramble
the rest of the words. Time your child as he/she sorts the words. Check the sort
and add one second for each incorrectly sorted word. *Rescramble the words,
leaving the same headings (category words) on the table out. Time your child a
second time. Your child should try to beat his/her first time.
Thursday: Writing Sort
Homework: Call out the words one at a time as your child writes the words in
categories on paper under the correct category words (underlined words). Your
child should not be able to see the words before writing them. This will help
prepare for Fridays spelling test. (If needed, write words three times each.)

Friday: Students will be assessed on the week's words. Transfer words

(words with similar spelling patterns) will be included on the assessments.
