TYPES OF DISABILITIES

Hearing Loss and Deafness

Hearing loss can vary from slight loss to complete deafness.

Some individuals may wear hearing aids. Some persons with
hearing loss use sign language to communicate, others read
lips and are able to speak, and some use a combination of
both methods.

Physical Disability
Many causes and conditions can impair mobility and
movement. The inability to use legs, arms, or the body trunk
effectively because of paralysis, stiffness, pain, or other
impairments is common. It may be the result of birth
defects, disease, age, or accidents. These disabilities may
change from day to day. They may also contribute to other
disabilities such as impaired speech, memory loss, short
stature, and hearing loss.

Vision Loss and Blindness

Learning Disability

Some individuals have trouble seeing. Visual problems range

from blurred or fuzzy vision to total blindness. Individuals
with visual problems differ widely in their needs, skills,
personalities, and attitudes.

Individuals who have learning disabilities may exhibit a

variety of difficulties, including problems with reading,
spoken language, writing, or reasoning ability. Hyperactivity
and inattention may also be associated with learning
disabilities. Coordination, behaviour, and interactions with
others may also be affected.

Speech and Language Disorders

Speech and language disorders are varied and can occur at
any age. Regardless of the severity of speech and language
disorders, a persons ability to interact and communicate
with others will be affected. Speech and language disorders
can interfere with a persons ability to understand, to
express his or her thoughts, or to be understood. Their
causes are varied. They may be present from birth, or they
can occur in childhood or later in life due to accident or
illness.

Mental Illness
There are many kinds of mental illnesses that affect the
way the brain functions. They can affect thoughts,
behaviours, emotions, and the ability to understand
information. Mental illnesses are different from everyday
experiences of sadness, feeling upset, or daily problems.
Mental illness makes normal living difficult.
