This one-semester course focuses on child development from conception through age 6. Students will learn about physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development, as well as parenting issues and responsibilities. Course assessments include projects, presentations, reports, and observations to demonstrate understanding of child growth, development theories, and skills for working with children. Students are expected to participate actively, complete assignments using Google Docs, and will visit a daycare and elementary school to observe children.

Course Description: This course will focus on understanding parenting through eyes of the child. Students will examine the
child's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development from conception through year 6. Students will understand the
importance of prenatal care. Students will address parenting issues and responsibilities. During the semester students will be
involved in various cooperative learning activities and projects.

Students are able to demonstrate competency in a way that works for them. Below, the course assessments are listed to
give you an idea of the summative opportunities that will be provided within the course for students to demonstrate
competency.
Course Competencies
Students will understand that various
conditions will influence child growth
and development from conception to
middle childhood.

Summative Assessments
Unit 1 summative: Choose an age range and explain the developments that are
happening in the childs body at that time and explain how both heredity and the
environment affect growth during this period. Use a poster or slideshow.
Unit 2 summative: Compare age and developmentally appropriate strategies that
promote child growth and development by comparing child care practices from the
United States and other countries.

Students will understand that child

development theories have implications
for working with children.

Unit 3 summative: Compare major theoretical perspectives, historical and current,

and their impact on child development practices: research and report on three
current and historical people and their theories and how those theories have
contributed to current practices.
Unit 7 summative: Demonstrate various basic methods used to observe and
interpret childrens growth and development: Submit your reflections about your
observations that you will have completed at the local day care center and the
elementary school.
Unit 4 summative: Examine the support systems used to meet the needs of
children: investigate and report on services for children and families that are
available through the town, county, state, and federal governments, as well as
private institutions.

Students will demonstrate the

knowledge and skills necessary to work
with children, birth to middle childhood.

Unit 5 summative: Research and report on several professional organizations that

oversee those who work with children.
Unit 6 summative: Make a timeline of people, events, and laws that have affected
children in the United States.

Student Expectations: Students will be expected to participate maturely in class discussions, generate guiding questions,
research information independently, compile and present their findings, and give constructive feedback to their peers. They will

be expected to have their books with them for class, as well as be able to bring the books home for homework reading and
writing assignments. They should have their iPads ready and charged in class every day.
I prefer that assignments be completed using Google Docs and Google Slides, so that they may be shared with me and easily
presented in class.

Course Evaluation & Assessment Practices: Homework will count as formative assessments and and be used to
determine if the student is ready to demonstrate competency through a summative assessment. Rubrics for each competency
will emphasize depth of knowledge. Student performance will be evaluated by single assessments that are connected to one
or more course competencies that reflect the students knowledge, ability, and skill.
If a student does not turn in an assignment on time, they will receive a mark in the grade book of NE for no evidence. Once
this happens, the student may meet with the teacher to make a plan to make up the missing work. If a plan to make up the
work is not made within 5 school days of the NE, the mark will change to a zero. Once work is returned according to the makeup plan, the grade will be changed to reflect what the student has earned on the assignment.

Additional Notes: The class will be going on field trips to the elementary school and a local nursery school/day care center.
Students will be observing and documenting the activities of the children there. Students will be expected to dress
professionally and conduct themselves in a mature, professional manner around the staff and children there. Permission slips
will be sent home prior to the field trips.
