Principles and Techniques in Combinatorics Exercise 1 #64: Danilo O. Jacobe

The document discusses finding the number of ways (L(r,n)) to distribute r distinct objects into n identical boxes such that no box is empty and the objects in each box are arranged in a row. It is noted that this is similar to distributing identical objects into distinct boxes, with the additional constraints of the objects being distinct and arranged within each box. The solution is found to be: L(r,n) = r! * (r-1)! / (n-1)! , which is the number of ways to distribute identical objects divided by the number of arrangements of identical boxes, and multiplied by the number of arrangements of distinct objects.

Principles and Techniques in Combinatorics

Exercise 1 #64

Given r, n N with r n, let L(r, n) denote

the number of ways of distributing r distinct
objects into n identical boxes so that no box
is empty and the objects in each box are
arranged in a row.
Find L(r , n) in terms of r and n.
Danilo O. Jacobe

Given:
r,n N with r n
L(r,n) - number of ways of distributing r
distinct objects into n
identical boxes so
that no box is empty and the objects in each
box are arranged in a row

Task:

Find L(r,n) in terms of r and n.

Danilo O. Jacobe

Recall:
Distribution Problem Case 2 (iii)

Distributing r identical objects into

n distinct boxes, r n :

r 1

n 1
Danilo O. Jacobe

Solution:
Step1: Distribute r identical objects into
n distinct boxes, i.e., r 1

n 1

Step2: Since the objects must be distinct and the

objects in each box are arranged in a row,
so arrangement matters. Multiply * by r!
Step3: Since the boxes must be identical, then its
arrangement must be removed from the
counting. Divide * by n!
Danilo O. Jacobe

Therefore, the desired number of ways is

given by

r! r 1

Lr , n
n! n 1
