Evolved Programmable Network Infographic

The document summarizes the evolution of network architecture from analog and circuit-based telephone and telegraph services in the late 19th century to the modern Evolved Programmable Network (EPN). Key developments included the digitalization of voice and data in the 1960s, the introduction of IP/MPLS networks in the 1990s allowing convergence of different services, and the emergence of network virtualization and synergy between networks and data centers in the modern EPN era. The EPN model aims to maximize efficiency through a physical, virtual, and converged infrastructure supporting applications through open APIs.

The Origin of Evolved
Programmable Networks
The history of the telegraph and the telephone are well
understood. In the beginning, services were analog, circuit
based, and dedicated. It was labor intensive, but the ability
to talk to someone over long distances was revolutionary!

Success Triggers Evolution

Over the following decades, a series of improvements

occurred that helped the solutions scale. The telephone
and the telegraph were no longer tools of the elite.
The economies of scale had reached the masses.

All Digital

Voice and data went digital. It may not

sound like much, but this was a major
network overhaul. From the digital age
emerged ubiquitous data services. Data
services were higher bandwidth and this
created higher network utilization.

The Network Age

Complex networks and shrinking margins led

some free-thinkers to ask,

"Why can't we run all of these services

on IP/MPLS?"
And the IP NGN era was born. This introduced
an IP service convergence which included,
voice, video, internet, and mobility.

The EPN Era

The importance of data center scale brought us

virtualization. As the data center and the network began
to merge another obvious question arose,
"Should we employ virtualization in the network?"
Computing and the Internet become synonomous.
People no longer play games by themselves or browse
independently. Instead of going to a store to buy a
game or video things are offered on-demand.
